ONS doesn't single out a single "number one" motive for why people are leaving the UK
So I'm finding out myself with an interactive microsite called the Brain Drain Wall
I believe more founders should build & scale their business here. We need to stop ur best talent leaving the UK
Here's an update on the mission so far.
Latest submissions show:
> 44% are leaving or already gone ✈️
> 56% are staying 📍
Caveat: Our data is massively skewed towards people still in the UK because we need more access to British expats overseas- if anyone has recommendations on how to access them, pls comment.
Number 1 reason for staying:
> Family is what keeps people here (44% )
Number 1 reason for going:
> Quality of life (24%), just tax right behind (22%)
Where they move to:
> USA (New York and San Francisco) at 25%+ 🇺🇸
> Portugal (9%), Spain (8%) & UAE (7%) come next 🇵🇹 🇪🇸 🇦🇪
> Monaco, Cyprus, Thailand & Australia now turning up too 🇲🇨 🇨🇾 🇹🇭 🇦🇺
We've featured organisations who are refusing UK's decline & who have their own ways of giving more founders reasons to stay in the UK. Most people are interested in (by way of most clicks):

Insights:
> we're holding onto people through who they'd have to leave behind rather than anything the country is offering them
> reason for leaving/wanting to leave: lack of job opportunities (16%), governance & freedom (13%), access to capital (11%) & regulation (10%)
> 25-34 is the biggest group in our dataset + the only age bracket where leavers outnumber stayers
> steepest exit rate sits with people 3-5 years into their careers at 59%.
> not just a graduate problem–– 45% have 10+ years of experience, 35% are founders or CEOs, and 16% are directors or heads of function
> as suspected, different demographics have different driving factors for leaving/wanting to leave
> our main audience are tech founders because of what we do at
@SuperteamUK, but since this is a national problem & we want to get other entrepreneurs/SMEs too
The plan is to keep going until the data pool is big enough to present a solid policy recommendation to government.
Every reason gets us closer to finding out how we can give them more reasons to stay.
