Not going to comment on the timeout aspect, but it seems the officials reset the clock to :01. They are not supposed to do so.
Replay rules only allow the clock to be reset when the clock starts on the ready for play and there are 3 or more seconds remaining and the offense has no timeouts. The reason is that the rules makers believe it is impossible for them to snap the ball from :02 or :01 before the clock hits :00 if the ready for play is correctly given and the clock starts accordingly.
Onfield officials are instructed not to reset here and let it go to replay. Replay would have allowed the game to end at that point.

Fair enough, @100ThingsUtah. I welcome all opinions, but I based my particular response on years of personal experience. And while I certainly didn't have Kirk's platform during my 26 years at ESPN, absolutely nobody in management ever asked or encouraged me to take a company position. But I understand the public skepticism--just offering my own perspective.
Gene, you may be right. But I hope you can understand why some (many?) find your claim dubious, or at least outdated.

This is an “inside baseball” type stat that won’t trump quality wins, schedule strength and record strength and what the committee sees on film. But it will put a number to answer the question: how tough is the daily grind in the each league? It’s not even equal within them.

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian's response when asked by @ThomasJonesAAS about playing in front of President Donald Trump:
"This will actually be my second time. I’ve had one other opportunity to do that. The one thing that you have to be aware of when the president goes to any game is that anytime he enters the stadium, leaves the stadium or changes locations within the stadium, they cut all communication. So they cut your headsets. They cut the headsets to coaches. They cut headsets for coach-to-player communication.
"So you have to have a plan for that, if and when it happens, and you get no warning. It just gets cut out. So you have to have a plan to adjust if and when he comes in the middle of the first quarter, leaves in the fourth quarter, or decides he’s got to use the restroom, whatever that looks like. You’ve got to be prepared to have no communication for a short amount of time.”
