So we finally got it done. Seven years later. Dignity for working UK songwriters. @IvorsAcademy #FixStreaming
I first floated the idea of a ‘songwriter per diem’ at an Ivors meeting six or seven years ago. I was used to receiving them as a touring musician and it seemed an easy solution to the problem of rising costs. It’s been amazing to watch the idea have a life and become a demand across the industry.

Here’s a nice flash back to 2021. We’ve now got the per diems and the session fee uplift. It’s honestly like pushing a boulder up a mountain. #BrokenRecord
Hey labels! Things you could have done in the time since I started talking about ER eighteen months ago: 1. Put all your artists on 25% minimums. 2. Settled all unrecouped debts that are more than 10 years old. 3. Doubled session rates. 4. Guaranteed songwriter per diems.

It’s great the Majors are arguing creators must be rewarded for usage in AI. But, if money does not get fairly paid onto creators because of out-of-date or inequitable contracts with rightsholders, it sadly rings hollow. Time to *really* get the shop in order. #BrokenRecord

I'm standing for the PRS Members Council. Please take the time to vote. It's so important that not only songwriters & composers are simply represented in that room, but they are represented emphatically, their interests articulated with knowledge and passion. Vote for me. Thanks.

Any argument for selective enforcement is, of course, ‘one rule for you and another for us’. We can steal music and art, but you can’t steal our stuff. Entitlements for sovereign corporations because why? They have grown our economy? Made millions of jobs? Made us happier? What?
It’s the height of hypocrisy to argue that training on copyrighted work without permission should be legal but that training on your model outputs should not

This is not debateable. So many tech-types confuse outputs with process. Humans need to create unprompted. That deep, human compulsion has allowed industries to build themselves on its exploitation. Humans will keep creating even though, destructively, they’re increasingly unable to make a living from it. What’s truly detrimental about Gen AI is that it betrays the human process of creativity. Its outputs are utterly pointless - more noise driving value down. Music was already fast and cheap. The companies who have wasted billions on LLMs when their own IP is already ‘out of the bottle’ and copied for mere millions, are just desperate for any monetisation of the LLMs. Music is simply low hanging fruit for lazy app-builders. It won’t improve music, it won’t make better music, it will just make something that sounds like music… Great. You spent billions on a thing that any kid can do for fun.

Thank you Tom for your kind reply. The first point I can accept although it is your personal opinion rather than factual. But the second point I think the word "Unprompted" is very debateable. And especially within the makers of popular music and popular art.

Firstly, humanity. The very thing that we build governments and laws to protect - not tech companies. Secondly, AI can only collage a novelty with a prompt. Unprompted a composer can paint, scratch, chisel, burn, twist, abandon, rethink, deep think, or take any pattern and notion from outside music or their imagination and apply it to the origination of music. Those who do not understand this have probably never been fully creative. You can’t equate ‘making’ with pure productivity, when even an industrial design process is rarely the latter.
Genuine question. What's the difference between a human composer who listens for 20 yrs and then writes an original song, to a neural network that listens to for a day and then writes an original song?

📢 @MrTomGray re-elected as Chair of The Ivors Academy. “There is unfinished business.” A passionate advocate for songwriters and composers, Tom’s leadership has driven real movement in government and the music industry. He’s been re-elected to continue the fight for fair pay, stronger protections and recognition for songwriters and composers. 🗣️ “There is a reason we produce much of the best music in the world. The UK has been investing in it for generations through the BBC, music sales, education and arts funding, Yet, whether it’s creator income, tax revenue to our treasury or investment in our communities, UK taxpayers are seeing far too little return. Global corporations continue to be the major recipients of all our shared effort.” "I know why I have been bestowed the great honour of being our Chair. There is unfinished business. We need to see real change for songwriters and composers. Our craft is under sincere threat. AI is upon us and our industry hasn’t got its own house in order. I will keep driving government and industry to realise the extent of the crisis we’re in.” Tom’s re-election concludes our current election cycle, which has brought in a new Senate and Board to represent members’ interests and shape our direction. 📸 Kenny McKracken @scottishkenny #musicindustry #songwriting #musicbusiness #musiccreators #songwriters #composer #musicpublishing #musicrights #independentartist #musicproducer #musicadvocacy #supportartists #musiccommunity
