Yesterday at our BuildHer Hackathon with @shecodeafrica, in partnership with the @apify team. In our early days, organising hackathons used be dicey because getting women to sign up for them wasn’t always easy. Today, that feels like a thing of the past. 😅 The room was filled with women building and solving real-world problems using web data, automation and @apify actors. From health and education to careers, products and everyday problems, I saw some really interesting solutions! Big shoutout to our Community Team, who led the planning and execution of this program end-to-end, navigating all the curveballs that came up along the way. The rhetoric that Africans sold themselves to the West is a white supremacy lie. When the Portuguese and British came, they came with guns and gunpowder. Africans were forced to become slave traders or risk being killed or sold as slaves. 3. Americans fought a war to end slavery: Rubbish. Some 650k to 850k people decided they’d rather die than see slaves freed. The rest of them are under this tweet, fighting for their rights to own and keep slaves. The war was not even about slavery. Slavery had become a threat to the balance between free and slave-holding states. Make of that what you will. 4. Africans were not civilized: Another lie. The University of Timbuktu existed long before any university was recorded in Europe. We had our own writing systems. In the Benin Kingdom, we had streets, and the streets had street lights made from oil lamps. Eastern Nigeria had its own writing system called Nsibidi 5. The British, French, and Portuguese destroyed our monuments, architecture, artworks, paintings, and manuscripts dating 100s to thousands of years because they wanted to sell the idea that we were primitive. We had been mining resources, including iron, for so long that in Yoruba land, Nigeria, there is a God dedicated to Iron. That god is called “Ogun” 6. The West stole artwork and other valuables from Africa and has refused to return them to date. They are in museums scattered throughout Europe and America. They have also continued to interfere in African politics and counter any progress on African Soil. Executing our revolutionaries. 7. The sad thing about war is that the victors are the ones who write history. Africans put up a good fight! With this, I will now mute this post. Thank you, Africans. Keep the fight going!

Again, picking cotton was the least of our problems as slaves. We were being skinned and made into leather chairs and shoes. Babies were being fed to crocodiles Men were raped while their children and wives watched. Wives were gang-raped in front of their husbands. Parents were invited to auctions where their children were sold off People were amputated for not meeting quotas. All they ever show you in Hollywood movies is black people being whipped whilst picking cotton. All this was also justified with the bible.
