ISLAM: THE TRIBE THAT BECAME A RELIGION
Islam did not abolish Arabian tribalism. It transformed it into a religious supertribe called the Ummah.
In ancient Arabia, your tribe determined your identity, loyalty, protection, and enemies. Islam replaced blood ties with religious allegiance. The tribe became global, transcending borders, nations, and ethnicities.
Your ultimate loyalty belongs to the Ummah. Leaving Islam is treated as betrayal, punishable by death. This transnational allegiance clashes with loyalty to the modern nation-state.
Islam also preserved tribal patriarchy. Muslim men can marry Christian and Jewish women, but Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslim men. The tribe can take women from outside, but outsiders cannot take its women.
This religious supertribe was built and expanded through six pillars.
1. THE SWORD: CONQUER OR SUBMIT
Islam spread its political rule through military conquest, subjugating tribes, kingdoms, and nations.
Muhammad declared:
“I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.”
Sahih al-Bukhari
The sword was not an accident of Islamic history. It was an instrument of expansion.
2. MONEY: WAR AS A BUSINESS
Armies need money. Raiding and conquest provided it.
Muhammad’s followers raided caravans, seized booty, and distributed the spoils.
Muhammad declared:
“My provision has been placed under the shadow of my spear.” Musnad Ahmad
The Quran allocated one-fifth of war booty to designated recipients, including Muhammad (8:41).
Conquest generated wealth. Wealth financed further conquest.
3. NUMBERS: BREEDING FOR POWER
Tribes boast about numbers because numbers mean strength, soldiers, and influence.
Muhammad encouraged reproduction:
“Marry loving, fertile women, for I will boast of your numbers before the nations.” Sunan Abi Dawud
More children meant a larger Ummah, more potential fighters, and greater power.
The obsession with numbers reflected the tribal mentality of strength through population.
4. SEX: WOMEN AS SPOILS AND REWARDS
Islam permitted warriors to take female captives as slaves and have sex with them.
Women captured in war could become property, be distributed among fighters, or be sold.
And if a fighter died, Paradise promised heavenly virgins.
Sexual access to captive women on earth. Heavenly virgins in Paradise.
Women became part of the rewards associated with conquest and religious devotion.
5. CENSORSHIP: SILENCE THE DISSENTERS
The tribe cannot tolerate challenges to its authority.
Islam prescribed death for apostasy, and its history includes killings of opponents who challenged Muhammad.
Criticize the prophet, and you risk death. Leave Islam, and you face the death penalty under sharia.
A religion that threatens dissenters with death is not defending truth. It is protecting power.
6. PROPAGANDA: GLORIFY THE TRIBE
In Arabia, poetry was the propaganda machine of tribal society.
Poets glorified victories, praised leaders, humiliated enemies, and exaggerated tribal greatness.
Muhammad employed poets such as Hassan ibn Thabit to defend him and attack his opponents.
Islam also used material incentives to attract or secure allegiance. The Quran explicitly allocated money to buy “those whose hearts are to be reconciled” (9:60).
Glorify the leader. Celebrate victories. Advertise growing numbers. Reward new allies. Portray the community as superior.
The objective was to build loyalty, project strength, and expand influence.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Islam did not destroy the tribal mentality of Arabia. It gave it a religious identity and universal ambitions.
The sword conquered. Money financed. Numbers strengthened. Sex rewarded. Censorship silenced. Propaganda glorified.
The tribe became the Ummah. Tribal loyalty became religious duty. And abandoning the tribe became apostasy.
Islam did not end tribalism. It turned tribal allegiance into a religious system.
