In a week that saw Microsoft give Activision the reins to Halo, one thing has become abundantly clear: the people in charge have a long-term overriding plan. Asha, Booty, etc. have clearly worked on it for months, and it is the most reasonable rational plan for fixing a business with poor margins, which is eliminating the sources of poor margins. Those sources include IP that are not selling to their potential and studios that take too long to produce games or cost too much relative to their output. It looks like this: Step 1 - Eliminate studios that cost more than the revenue they bring in. This was partially executed in June, further executed now, and will continue to be executed in coming months. These processes take time. You do not wake up one morning and suddenly do layoffs. What we see this week clearly took 3+ months of deep planning and coordination between studio leadership, HR departments, discussions with the MS board, etc. Step 2 - Attach IP with potential to the best caretakers within the group. I have seen very dumb takes from analysts saying "Why bother with Halo at all" but this is wrong as well. Just because an IP has been on the ropes due to bad dev for a decade does not mean it cannot come back. Step 3 - Continue to optimize and adjust strategy based on market reaction and feedback, particularly given that the fruits of the decisions being made now will take years to grow. This plan has been telegraphed by the Xbox leadership team for months. It has even been communicated externally with smartly written blog posts. It is being executed by that leadership team on reasonable timelines. All decisions made are both correct and clearly being done with intent. No one is "just reacting." Implying otherwise is disingenuous. If the workers quoted below do not understand this plan, they should leave. Xbox will be better off for it.
in a week that saw microsoft give activision the reins to halo and bungie pivot back to destiny, one thing has become abundantly clear: the people in charge do not have a long-term, overriding plan. they’re just reacting. the result, when times are bad, is chaos

Good if true .. Halo needs a new baseline to start from again

Second this, Ninja Theory have an incredible motion capture studio (world class), big shame they couldn't find any partners. Halo Studios though I agree needed a tighter ship which they might get under Activision, I also want to see MORE of Halo. It's TOO Big of a universe to just have one game every 5 or so years lol. Lets get some different genres in for Halo. I've been complaining about Rare's output also for awhile, Sea of Thieves came out in 2018. They haven't released any other game since then... (8 years ago) - Cancelling Everwild which reportedly no one knew what that game was, even those inside the studio. Double Fine now making games fans actually want to play, just took them not relying on xbox and now being independent surviving to realize that. Some shakeups were needed imo.
Replying to @ballmatthew
I kinda wish @NinjaTheory was rolled into the @CoalitionGears, @XBOX's hub for @UnrealEngine. Could allow for the shelved game The Coalition was working on to be finished or even better, continue @senuagame's series of games with a more visceral flare all while retaining talent.

After seeing the way Halo’s been managed post Reach, Anything is better than 343/Halo Studios.
The next HALO game will be made by Activision.

Microsoft is asking fans if they want the Project Helix to support 'Physical Discs' A survey from Xbox Insider Hub app on Xbox consoles is asking fans want they want from the next-generation Xbox. The survey mentions some interesting features, like “lighting on the console that changes to match the game you are playing” and a system that allows the console to “automatically identify and save gameplay highlights” so that they are ready to share and if they want the next-generation Xbox to let them “install games from a physical disc.” powerupgaming.co.uk/2026/09/…

The combat in Blood of the Dawnwalker, when it clicks. It CLICKS, it took a bit for me to get used to but super satisfying once you get it. Absolutely obsessed with this game right now. My current GOTY! Soo good! @BandaiNamcoUS

You may have seen a recent article that mentions KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, speculating on the reasons for the change in publishing partners for PHYSINT. Normally, we would not comment on unsubstantiated speculation on the internet, but these aspersions around our relationship with PlayStation, the commercial performance of the DEATH STRANDING franchise, and the broader production planning and investment for PHYSINT, have reached beyond the studio and have touched our fans, our creative partners, and colleagues we have worked alongside with for three decades. None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source and as such we encourage you to take them with a dose of scepticism. Make no mistake, this was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications. While we recognise that the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all, for the record: that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for PHYSINT continues to move forward with XBOX, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong. Thank you for your continued support, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS

Xbox’s clever disc-to-digital feature was 15 years in the making “Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell me the company was exploring the idea of true Xbox digital ownership in 2011, including digital gifting, recycling digital games, and the ability to swap discs at retail stores in exchange for a digital version. Some of those original Xbox One plans leaked out online, and many others have remained secret for more than a decade.” “Microsoft’s Xbox One launch hinted at some of these ideas, too. The console was originally supposed to be always online, to enable Microsoft’s vision of digital game sharing, and more. Microsoft walked back those plans after a messy and confusing Xbox One launch created a backlash to the always-online requirement. But some of those original digital ideas are now starting to come to life in different ways.” “Microsoft’s decision to essentially embed a serial number on the discs that Xbox consoles can read has allowed it to launch disc-to-digital, a method that lets you turn a physical Xbox One disc into a digital copy simply by slotting it into a disc drive. A decision made 15 years ago has resulted in this useful feature and may well lead to true digital ownership in the coming years.” via: Tom Warren theverge.com/tech/996826/mic…
