RuTAG 2.0 Annual Review Meeting at IIT Roorkee The 3rd Annual Review Meeting of RuTAG 2.0 is being held at IIT Roorkee on September 24–25, 2026, bringing together researchers, scientists and officials from leading IITs and scientific institutions to strengthen the transition of rural technologies from laboratory research to grassroots adoption. The Campus Walk by volunteers in IIT Roorkee Campus for the Preparatory Phase of Special Campaign 6.0 (the Government of India's nationwide institutional cleanliness and pendency-reduction drive) and Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign was conducted on 20 September 2026. It turned into the successful identification of spots for cleanup and beautification. Split into seven zones covering the entire campus, the volunteers spent the hour from 9 to 10 AM documenting every site that needs attention before the main clean-up phase begins in October. By the end, the team had geotagged and photographed sites around the campus with piles of construction scrap and broken furniture outside academic departments, to overflowing waste bins, rusted bicycles, and unused equipment tucked into hostel storage areas. The findings will now be consolidated and fed into the Institute's clean-up planning ahead of the main implementation phase, running from October 2 to 31. IIT Roorkee Students Showcase Indigenous Chip Design at SEMICON India 2026 Students from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), IIT Roorkee, showcased an indigenous chip designed at IIT Roorkee and fabricated at Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), Chandigarh, under the Chips to Startup (C2S) Programme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi. The students also had the opportunity to interact with the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, and to highlight the Institute’s work in indigenous semiconductor design and development. The showcased RF Receiver Design is intended for applications in wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, satellite navigation, aerospace and defence systems, and quantum computing. Giving Back to the Alma Mater: Ruby Jubilee Alumni Strengthen IIT Roorkee The Ruby Jubilee of the 1986 Batch and B.Arch 1987 Batch brought together alumni who graduated from IIT Roorkee four decades ago, reaffirming their enduring connection with their alma mater and their commitment to giving back. The alumni collectively contributed ₹5.06 crore to IIT Roorkee, the highest contribution received from a single batch by the Institute so far. The contribution reflects the strong and sustained commitment of alumni towards strengthening their alma mater. The Ruby Jubilee brought together 174 alumni, including 40 NRIs and 12 alumni from Nepal, as well as alumni from across India, reflecting the global reach of the IIT Roorkee alumni community. The contribution will support the strengthening of the Institute’s academic and institutional ecosystem, creating opportunities to further advance education, research and institutional development. The final chapter of IIT Roorkee's Convocation 2026 — Day 02, as our postgraduate scholars and doctoral researchers stepped forward to receive the degrees they spent years earning. On 20 September, 1,424 students received their degrees — 903 postgraduate, 518 PhD and 3 MS by Research. The 518 doctoral degrees, 172 of them conferred on women scholars, are the highest in the Institute's history, and the MS by Research degree was awarded for the first time under the National Education Policy. Across both days, IIT Roorkee conferred a record 2,701 degrees. The ceremony was graced by Shri Harshavardhan Chitale, Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp, as Chief Guest, and Dr. Kapil Garg, Founder & Managing Director, Oilmax Energy Pvt. Ltd., an alumnus of the Institute, as Guest of Honour, alongside Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director, Prof. Praveen Kumar, Deputy Director, and Prof. N. K. Navani, Dean of Academic Affairs, IIT Roorkee. Shri Chitale told the graduates that character will matter as much as capability, and that a career is measured by what it enables, not only by what it achieves. Dr. Garg, returning to his alma mater, reminded them that failure is not failure in itself, and left them with three words behind the R in IIT R: rigour, rejoice and resilience. Prof. Pant called the record number of PhDs a reflection of the strength and breadth of the Institute's research ecosystem. The day recognised 71 awards, including 33 medals. Relive Day 01 of IIT Roorkee's Convocation 2026 — the day our undergraduate class of 2026 walked across the stage. On 19 September, 1,277 undergraduate students received their degrees, as part of the 2,701 conferred across the two days — the highest in the Institute's history. The BS-MS degree was also awarded for the first time under the five-year Dual Degree Programme. The ceremony was graced by Shri Ajit Kumar Doval, KC, National Security Advisor of India, as Chief Guest, and General N. S. Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Chief of Defence Staff, as Guest of Honour. It was presided over by Adv. Harish Salve, Chairman, Board of Governors, alongside Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director, Prof. Praveen Kumar, Deputy Director, and Prof. N. K. Navani, Dean of Academic Affairs, IIT Roorkee. The Institute conferred the degree of Honoris Causa upon Shri Doval, who told the graduates theirs is the luckiest generation in a thousand years, and left them with three questions to carry: where you are, where you want to go, and the route to reach there. General Subramani urged them to learn, unlearn and relearn in a world changing faster than ever. And Prof. Pant reminded them that a degree marks not the end of a programme, but the beginning of a journey of contribution to society and the nation. Vasi, Professor Emeritus, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, will deliver an Institute Lecture on “50 Years of Solar in India: Achievements and Challenges.” With over four decades of experience in microelectronics and photovoltaics, Prof. Vasi’s work includes solar photovoltaic research, PV education, and technology development. He was the Founding Principal Investigator of the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IIT Bombay and the PV Research Thrust Co-Lead of the Solar Energy Research Institute for India and the United States (SERIIUS). Shivani Choudhary, PhD (Physics), was awarded the Dr. Sushil Sharma Excellence in Doctoral Research Award on Day 2 of Convocation 2026 — an institute-level honour recognising outstanding doctoral research at IIT Roorkee. Her work spans perovskite solar cells and CO₂ photoreduction, directed at decentralised energy technology developed indigenously within the country, and at cleaner air in India's cities. She credits the Institute for the platform behind that work — an instrumentation ecosystem that brought everything her research needed under one umbrella, and the support of the Dean of Resources and Alumni Affairs (DoRA) at IIT Roorkee, whose funding took her to conferences abroad and shaped the course of her doctoral journey. She also thanks her professors and her family for their support through the years. She now moves towards a career in academia, carrying forward research that contributes to a cleaner environment and to sustainable development for the country. Dr. Kapil Garg, Founder & Managing Director, Oilmax Energy Pvt. Ltd. and Managing Director, Asian Energy Services Ltd., returned to IIT Roorkee as Guest of Honour on Day 2 of Convocation 2026 — to the campus where he once studied, and to a convocation ceremony he had never been able to attend as a student himself. He spoke of what the alumni community owes the place that shaped it. Alumni, he said, have a far bigger role to play, and he is in active discussion with the Institute about taking up larger projects together. "We are a creation of the institute" — education is what changes us. Asked for the one lesson that has stayed with him, he returned to something the Vice-Chancellor told his batch on the day they joined: don't worry too much about the studies, enjoy this place — the education will take care of itself. Work hard, and enjoy the moment. The skills he values most from those years are the social ones, and in the world his juniors are entering, he believes those will matter more, not less. He left the graduating class with three words behind the R in IIT R — rigour, rejoice and resilience. Adrija Ghosh, PhD (Chemistry), was awarded the Excellence in Doctoral Research Award on Day 2 of Convocation 2026 — an institute-level honour recognising the depth and impact of doctoral work at IIT Roorkee. Her research is in sustainable 3d metal catalysis, using nickel as a transition metal to convert biomass into valuable products. Among its outcomes is the synthesis of Tamoxifen, a drug used in the treatment of breast cancer — arrived at by a route in which sustainability came first. She credits her supervisor, Prof. Banerjee, the Department of Chemistry and IIT Roorkee at large for the years behind that work, and her parents, friends and family for the support that carried her here. She now moves on to a postdoctoral position, with the intention of building a career in academia.
