During a business trip I heard about multiple companies who are struggling to hire people. Jobs available but they can't fill them. There is a huge disconnect in the job market somewhere- the systems responsible for efficient and effective recruitment have completely failed.

No, they are not IT companies and they aren't in a position to recruit foreign labor for reasons I won't detail here.

There are probably multiple disconnects, but I can certainly identify one. HR departments that are ideologically opposed to hiring straight white males and will reject even those that are good fits.

Definitely a big part of it, but I have to wonder if even the software being used is extensively ideologically compromised

It's a combination of incompetent, useless HR boss ladies along with companies refusing to pay a living wage, while simultaneously making standards unreasonably strict.

Their HR department is silently rejecting all candidates with the "wrong" demographics

Corporate America: “We flatly refuse to hire white American men, it’s not their turn anymore.” But also corporate America: “We can’t find any good employees now, what ever could be the problem.”

Reminds me of the dodo bird mating ritual 99% of job posting are fake Try to apply in person they tell you to go online AI system stops your resume from getting to a person Get interview? HR hires some unqualified friend that quits soon. Repeat. Also employers know how annoying it is so if you get a job, so you cant quit cause trying to find another job requires you to be jobless and apply 24/7 for months. Why don't they just make it extremely illegal to make fake job postings?

In tech, almost none of my interviews were with Americans, in America, since 2023. People are done with 7 rounds of interviews with visas just to lose to yet another visa.

They're faking. They want to claim that so they can h1-b some slave labor

I am hiring for a marketing role right now. I’m coming up on 1000 applicants, the majority of them are not in the US. Many claim to be in the US but are actually in India or Africa. They’ve used AI to make their CV and resumes an exact fit. I’m not sure what the solution is.

HR is the disconnect.

Could the problem be with HR? That seems to be the most likely culprit for this trend.

"struggling to hire" for what wage?

List the jobs and pay. I bet there are large numbers looking for those jobs. Instead of finding some massive systemic failure, the company has not looked where it should or rejects suitable candidates for reasons other than competence. This smacks of DEI.

1) where are they posting the jobs? 2) who or what is looking at submitted resumes? 3)Does the application system even work? When I was out of work I encountered more than one bespoke application system that required I manually retype everything in my resume (no copy and paste) and then on the last page of a two hour application process it wouldn't submit. 3) do any of them need a remote information security analyst who is a US citizen?

I work a fairly large company and there are 2 people doing the resume gatekeeping. Internal managers don’t even see some applicants.

It’s HR without a doubt. The deployed a bunch of systems they didn’t understand. They don’t QC the results. Then most of them are incompentent at evaluating talent or incredibly biased.

My favorite is where HR/recruiting lies in the job advert ("we're not really hybrid, but we might let you work hybrid for four onsite days a week after you've been here a year!") but will proceed to disqual you if you don't have every exact line-item requirement to their exacting specification.

It's the HR filter. Technical managers know they need people and what they need, HR filters those people based on "culture fit" (i.e. not being female/brown enough) before they ever get to the technical manager, technical manager refuses the HR-approved ones due to incompetence.

My husband has this problem routinely, trying to hire any type of (non IT) engineer. HR comes back with one or two mediocre candidates if he's lucky. It's ridiculous. They aren't even filing jobs with visa workers. We don't get it. 🤷‍♂️

HR gets in the way. If hiring managers don’t have enough time to do the hiring, the company has a serious issue.

HR is using AI to screen applications and unless it tickles the AI's fancy a person doesn't ever see your app

Wouldn't surprise me. Everyone is using HR as a screener, and they use filters to discard tons of qualifying resumes because some little metric that is missed on the automatic screening.

HR is always the bottleneck. My last employer insisted on a 3 month process with interviews. Qualified people found jobs elsewhere

There's a 5 round, month long interview process for my blue collar job. I'm two people and another is about to quit. There's people daily calling for jobs but no one is being hired I cant image how much worse it is in white collar

my theory is that its the same "problem" as teachers. Maybe 40 years ago extremely bright women were "office managers" or "executive admins" (bc sexism) and were highly competent. Those women are now badass attorneys and doctors. The median HR & teacher is lower human capital.

You know the problem. You've always known the problem. You would just rather hire useless HR babes to look pretty than actually solve your problems and whine about it on the Internet.
