Exactly two years ago today, IPAC learnt that Chinese state-sponsored hacking group APT31 had targeted our network, through an unsealed @TheJusticeDept indictment. The “pixel reconnaissance” attacks began in January 2021, targeting 121 lawmakers and many of their staff. Though the FBI notified respective governments in 2022, 16 of 18 affected legislatures failed to inform lawmakers of the activity or their exposure to attack. To our knowledge, only Lithuania and Switzerland acted on the information. Those not told included chairs of foreign affairs committees across two continents. When impacted politicians were finally briefed by their governments, the nature of the attack was downplayed. This was the first time a PRC sponsored cyber attack on the IPAC network was explicitly confirmed. Today, Parliaments are still unable to protect lawmakers adequately, leaving those of us working to address the challenges posed by the PRC dangerously exposed to ongoing Chinese state threats.

Yesterday @HouseofCommons debated an anti-slavery amendment to the Industry and Exports Bill, tabled by @MPIainDS which would have prevented UK Export Finance supporting companies like AVIC and China Southern (see 📹👇) The amendment was resisted by @GOVUK and defeated 272:161
