Spent an hour solving a Resident Evil style crypt puzzle in Hell is Us. I was truly stumped, read through the clues numerous times, then when it clicked it was one of the best feelings in gaming.

I fell into this one yesterday and logged a cool 4 hours. Insane by working dad standards. Hours of precious night night time were sacrificed. I love everything about this. No map, no quest markers. Getting lost. The warped world that’s like ours, just a few degrees off. Great writing. It has an insane ‘health pulse’ fighting system that caused me to completely flip how I’m used to playing these types of games. It’s like Death Stranding and Dark Souls (even though it is not a soulslike) with heavy visual and audio cues from Annihilation.

I started this last night and…man. Horror game developers were on some other shit. You’re instantly dropped into an insane, tense situation. The atmosphere goes crazy. Feels like a nightmare.

Watched John Carpenter’s The Thing last night. My wife had never seen it. She loved it of course, and when we were doing our postmortem we both commented on how it’s nice to watch a movie without any meta commentary or characters being quirky. It is what it is. There’s a shapeshifting alien, the guys figure out what to do about it, then the fun is in seeing if it works out. Obviously there’s no ‘ah jeez, monsters from space, really?’ wink wink nudge nudge that is in every film now. The dialogue is utilitarian and the jokes are not self-referential. Would be cool to see more of that in modern horror!

Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself. When you hold a grudge against someone, you become their slave, because they become the master of your peace. You must also forgive yourself. On that note, I wish my followers a good fast and may the new year be filled with blessings.
