Well done and congratulations to the many delegates who walked out of the United Nations General Assembly as Benjamin Netanyahu took to the podium. Their action sent a powerful message that international law cannot mean one thing for some and another for others. It is deeply provocative and demeaning to the victims of Gaza that Netanyahu can address the world from the UN podium while he remains subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. The ICC found reasonable grounds to believe that he bears criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, including starvation as a method of warfare, murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. The allegations of genocide are legally distinct. They form part of proceedings concerning Israel before the International Court of Justice, while Netanyahu’s ICC warrant concerns alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Whatever one’s politics, the credibility of the international legal order depends on its rules being applied consistently. Those delegates who walked out exercised their right to register, in the clearest possible way, their rejection of business as usual while Palestinians continue to endure catastrophic suffering.
