Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School hit syndication on October 16, 1988, as part of the Superstars 10 lineup, and it still feels like the ideal monster-kid cartoon once the leaves start turning. Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy roll up expecting a normal gym-teacher gig at Miss Grimwood’s Finishing School for Girls and instead land in a castle full of the daughters of the Universal classics: Sibella (Dracula), Elsa Frankenteen, Winnie the werewolf, Phantasma the ghost, and Tanis the mummy.
Miss Grimwood keeps the place running with her tiny fire-breathing dragon Matches, a floating white hand, an octopus butler, and a two-headed shark in the moat. The girls just want to win their volleyball match against the neighboring military-school boys, but Revolta, the Witch of the Web, and her pumpkin-headed sidekick the Grim Creeper have other plans for midnight. Open House on Halloween night brings the actual monster dads around to check on their kids, which is pure 80s monster-mash comfort food.
Vampire Bite Fun Fact: the film ends with an alien, a Creature from the Black Lagoon type, and even a Godzilla-sized kaiju dropping off their own daughters for the next school year, because of course the enrollment never stops.
If you grew up catching this one between Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers and the Reluctant Werewolf, you already know the vibe—spooky enough for October, silly enough for Saturday morning cereal. Crypt Squad, who else had this one on rotation every fall? 🎃🍂🍫
