Holborn and St Pancras has got to be a top 10 bizarre constituency name. Holborn must be max 10% of the population and St Pancras is barely a place

They made an attempt to change it to 'Kentish Town and Bloomsbury' in 2021 but local councillors said they wanted to keep St Pancras in the name due to area's link to Roman times.

Didn’t realise they deliberately kept the name in the end, I assumed it just got lost in the gears of the review!

It is the name of the 2 old metropolitan boroughs pre 1965 that make up the constituency. Holborn, st pancras and hampstead were merged to form the borough of camden

Useful explanation of why it was called that in the first place!

St Pancras is one of the most important railway stations in the country. Next door is the British Library. Opposite is Camden Town Hall, previously called St Pancras Town Hall. Nearby is St Pancras church - one of the most ancient sites of Christian worship. Not bizarre at all.

St Pancras isn't even in the top three busiest railway stations in the constituency. The seat actually includes 5 of the 15 busiest railway stations in the country

Go and walk around the constituency and see how many people are living there, flats, houses, etc? It’s hugely diverse

It’s because the constituency roughly covers the two metropolitan boroughs of Holborn and St Pancras that merged with Hampstead to create Camden in 1965.

Doesn't it refer to the old borough names?

The boundary lines for these constituencies are often completely disconnected from actual neighborhood geography.

I only just learned that it encompasses Camden among its constituency this week.

I give you the council ward: St Pancras and Somers Town

Tatton is also weird. It’s mainly wilmlsow Alderley and knutsford yet is named after a national trust hall

Wait until you see Atcham (pop 240), which until 2024 was pinned on to Shrewsbury. Mainly on account of it giving its name to what SHOULD have been Shrewsbury Rural District Council until, erm, 50 years earlier 😂

Chippenham, which includes a tiny bit of Swindon and a vast rural area to the east but not a metre west outside of Chippenham itself

yeah, 'Camden and Bloomsbury' or similar would be better.

Presumably two old vestries? Bloomsbury and Camden, or King's Cross and Camden, would mean more now.

i really don’t understand why it isn’t a stronger seat/area for the greens. with camden town + the bangladeshi population + the UCL campus you’d think they’d be the favourites but labour looks set to hold it as they did during the local elections?

Should have just renamed it St Pancras and Camden Town

It's the bizarre convention of retaining the names of boroughs that haven't existed for decades. 'Camden South' would be the most accurate name.

Guess Camden South didn't sound posh enough for the locals...

It’s not even north-London. Yards from the Thames at the Covent Garden end.

More bizarre than the two candidates picked by the Green and Labour parties to replace Keir Starmer?
