As a former Union organizer, and current union member, I can’t think of anything more American than the right of workers to unionize and collectively bargain.
We are talking about Hearst CT Journalists, Editors and Photographers Unionizing - Monday 8/12 on CT Politics Tv.
When workers stand together they can get a seat at the table to discuss a living wage and benefits. Sometimes a union is recognized and sometimes, as in the case with Hearst, the new Union is not going to be recognized immediately. Dialog is critical to avoiding a strike. Sometimes a strike, which both sides hope to avoid, is unavoidable, and it can take longer.
The historic Frontier hotel strike was detailed in the movie “One Day Longer: The Story of the Frontier Strike” you can listen to a panel of strikers and organizers who, 34 years ago, walked the 24/7 picket line and supported the historic and successful 6 year, 4 months, and 10 days Frontier Strike. WHY: The longest and most successful strike in the history of the United States, The Frontier Strike, began on September 21, 1991. Over 550 workers maintained a 24/7 picket line in this historic 24-hours-a-day, 7-days a week strike. Not one striker ever crossed the line. The Frontier Strike ended 6 years, 4 months, and 10 days later, on February 1, 1998, when Phil Ruffin bought the resort from owner Margaret Elardi. At the end of The Frontier Strike, all the strikers were able to return back to work. The Culinary Union negotiated that original workers be brought back to their jobs and workers were provided back pay and benefits. During the course of the strike, 17 strikers passed away and 107 children were born.
