At the 21st Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 🇰🇷🌏, I had the privilege of joining an important conversation on “Rethinking Multilateralism in an Era of Fragmentation.” The discussion was timely because trust in international institutions is declining just as geopolitical rivalry is intensifying. It was an honour to share the stage with an outstanding panel: H.E. Gareth Evans 🇦🇺, former Foreign Minister of Australia; Mr. Abe Nobuyasu 🇯🇵, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs; Ms. Angela Kane 🇩🇪, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Management; and Ambassador Zhang Jun 🇨🇳, Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia. Nearly three decades with the United Nations 🇺🇳 took me from the aftermath of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 to the humanitarian crises of South Sudan 🇸🇸, Iraq 🇮🇶, Sudan 🇸🇩 and Somalia 🇸🇴; from development partnerships in Denmark 🇩🇰, Kenya 🇰🇪 and China 🇨🇳. Across every assignment, one lesson remained constant: When institutions fail, ordinary people bear the consequences. When nations choose dialogue over division, peace becomes possible. Today, as CEO of Global Neighbours, I carry that conviction forward with renewed purpose. Our mission is to strengthen Track II diplomacy, build bridges across regions and generations, and create trusted spaces where leaders, scholars, innovators, and young people can engage across political divides. In an era of fragmentation, building relationships is no longer complementary to diplomacy—it is diplomacy. The United Nations 🇺🇳 was founded on a simple yet profound conviction: that humanity’s greatest challenges can only be solved collectively. Today, that conviction is under unprecedented strain. Strategic competition is displacing strategic cooperation. Consensus is becoming increasingly elusive. We are facing not merely a crisis of institutional effectiveness, but a crisis of political will. Despite today’s challenges, I remain optimistic. Reform is not about replacing the multilateral system—it is about strengthening it, broadening its legitimacy, and ensuring that it continues to serve future generations. My sincere appreciation to the Jeju Peace Institute 🇰🇷 and the Jeju Forum for convening a dialogue distinguished by intellectual rigour, candour, and a genuine commitment to advancing peace. Climate change. Artificial intelligence. Pandemics. Nuclear proliferation. Demographic transformation. None of these challenges respects borders. None can be solved by any nation acting alone. They demand shared responsibility, courageous leadership, and meaningful international cooperation.
