I'll try out the free version for a while then probably upgrade because I love having lots of tools available to help me stay on track... even if I'm not always good at doing so. 🎶🎵I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it...🎶🎵

I read it (oddly starting with book 3) when my oldest son was about 9... he wasn't interested yet, but I loved it. Went on to read the rest, bawled my eyes out when Dumbledore died. Cried even harder when we learned about Snape's real role and sacrifice. My kids all loved the books as rest got older, we all adored the movies... truly magical experience with kids. I'm 55 and still waiting for my owl.

Thief of Night, by Holly Black, sequel to Book of Night, which was a lot harder to get into because it's much darker and grittier than I was expecting... (Black's Cruel Prince series is my hand-down fave), but it's at least about and for adults. This one has been pretty good, much more enjoyable than book 1 now that I'm "into it". It's still dark and disturbing, but good.

That's cool! If you purchase a book on Kindle you can often get a discounted Audible audiobook, too. Some titles also have a "default" narration option that are really affordable ($1-4), but they're not as common and aren't the dramatic reading versions. I've been taking advantage of the Libby app -- it connects with your local library to borrow anything they have at that location, including ebooks and audiobooks (so everything is done online/on your phone). You can reserve them, and when available you can listen right away or put them on hold until you're ready (adds a couple days after removing the hold).

A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courts—even as she falls in love with a faerie prince—in this “phenomenal” (RT Book Reviews) bestseller that’s “an ideal pick for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Isobel is an artistic prodigy with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a weakness that could cost him his life. Furious, Rook spirits her away to his kingdom to stand trial for her crime. But something is seriously wrong in his world, and they are attacked from every side. With Isobel and Rook depending on each other for survival, their alliance blossoms into trust, then love—and that love violates the fair folks’ ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel. amazon.com/Enchantment-Raven…

Delighted to share a scene snippet from a favorite book for this autumn-themed TBR for 22 #FantasyIndiesSeptember “Aha,” he added, straightening, “I’d nearly forgotten. We’ve had gossip in the spring court that the autumn prince is going to pay you a visit. Imagine that! I look forward to hearing whether he manages to sit through an entire session, or hares off after the Wild Hunt as soon as he’s arrived.” I wasn’t able to school my expression at the news. I stood gaping at Gadfly until a puzzled smile crossed his lips and he extended his pale hand in my direction, perhaps trying to determine whether I’d died standing up, not an unreasonable concern, as to him humans no doubt seemed to expire at the slightest provocation. “The autumn—” My voice came out rough. I closed my mouth and cleared my throat. “Are you quite certain? I was under the impression the autumn prince did not visit Whimsy. No one has seen him in hundreds…” Words failed me. “I assure you, he is alive and well. Why, I saw him at a ball just yesterday. Or was it last month? In any event, he shall be here tomorrow. Do pass on my regards.”
#FantasyIndiesSeptember 16: Flash fiction or poem I will write a poem about autumn some day. I don't write flash fiction, though, so here is a snip of autumn in Amallar and a little something going on.

I would like to thank the creators of movies and tv shows for introducing the concept of "ENHANCE" so people think graphic artists can magically transform a small, grainy image into original poster quality photos.

Afterwards ... but I usually have a rough idea of what I want to happen in the story. Found family is typically there because I believe we build our families through shared experiences (& we need them). Enemies to lovers often crops up in my stories because not all loves begin with a sweet "meet cute" and wind up HEA... The one story I've written where they experience love at first sight, he breaks her heart and they become enemies for quite a while before reconnecting. But I don't plan my writing around the tropes, but at least SOME tropes happen anyway in most books, like "chosen one", orphans, tortured heroes, quests, dark lords, portal / "fish out of water", lost heir, mentor's sacrifice (Gandalf's "Fly, you fools!"), red herrings, reversal of fortune, betrayals, cliffhangers, etc.

I was working on this more today while waiting for my files to process... it's in the middle of the others and I didn't want to bend the paper, so I flipped the whole thing around, turned my phone around and then drew it upside-down. It forced me to only draw what I could see, not what I thought it should be. (It's the back side of the lighthouse I sketched at the far right of the group set.)

Oops! Forgot to include the spoilers I mentioned in the article... well, here they are — YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! SPOILERS: * The initial kiss is presented as intentional abuse, but is actually welcomed — and returned — which confuses both Jude and Cardan. ** We learn that part of the reason they hate each other is jealousy of their perceived family status and upbringing, as well as irritation that they are attracted to one anoin spite of intense dislike and mistrust.

One of the gorgeous illustrations from inside this book... It's not at all the style of the art Holly Black commissioned by Frost Studio, but it's still lovely...

amazon.com/King-Elfhame-Lear… This one LOOKS like a children's book... and it does not have objectionable content in it, but it's not a particularly *nice* story... (Image of the first page from the book sample -- the last line just kills me. It is a VERY fun and occasionally very funny story.)
