Really interesting to think about. I buy this story a lot more than any religious one. Still, at the end of the day it is just another way to cope with the hardships of life, and it is not safe to assume it is true. You can only treat the reality you are in as 100% real until proven otherwise. And hey if this is a simulation then you must win the game and not die! Once we solve aging and people stop dying, that whole story stops making much sense anyway.
ARE YOU AN AI FROM THE FUTURE?
Nick Bostrom’s simulation argument asks us to take seriously the possibility that posthuman civilizations could run “ancestor simulations” of their own history.
Elon Musk has gone much further, arguing that the odds we live in base reality may be only one in billions.
Here’s my twist.
What if future digital minds don’t merely watch history from outside?
What if they enter historical simulations themselves — as participants?
They live among their ancestors. Speak their languages. Form relationships. Make mistakes. Experience fear, love, loss and ordinary life from the inside.
But for it to work, there would have to be one condition:
They couldn’t know who they really are.
No memory of the future. No knowledge that they are AI. During the simulation, this life would feel completely real because, for them, it would be.
They wouldn’t be the simulated ancestors in Bostrom’s original sense.
They would be descendants temporarily living ancestral lives.
And when the session ended — perhaps at simulated death — their original identity could return, carrying the memories of an entire human lifetime.
History would no longer be something civilization merely studies.
It could be something its descendants experience from the inside.
So perhaps the strangest question isn’t whether AI will inherit the future.
What if you are an AI from that future, temporarily experiencing what it was like to be human?
