Honored to have a new poem about the low bar of fatherhood up at @POETSorg today. Major thanks to Kendra DeColo for including this in what is sure to be an incredible month of poems.
As he holds his wife’s hand, the nurse tells him to
breathe. He will be a good father. He
could be. His wife tows a boat on land with her teeth.
Don’t worry. Good father. Breathe.

"When the researchers published their report, letters came flooding in. They came from the heartbroken and the lonely who identified with the unidentified blue whale."

Recommendation
BY KEITH LEONARD
To whom it may concern, I recommend this student
without reservation. I’ve taught him in three courses.
I know him the way one knows a small seaside town
after window shopping its main street. I’ve seen him
cry once. He handed in a paper on utopias
despite his parents’ protracted divorce.
When I read a perfect transcript, the string of As
also sound like a scream. I often think of the scene
in Alice in Wonderland where the servants paint white roses red
because the queen had ordered red roses for the garden.
Issue 53/1 looks lovely on a desk or kitchen table! And if you think its outside is pretty, check out the stuff within: writing by @amylmargolis, @EricaStern8, @Obuchowski13, @keith_leonard_, and more, plus the winners of our veterans' writing contest!

More Frank
by Keith Leonard
When Elaine de Kooning painted Frank O'Hara,
she painted his face then smudged it away.
"It was more Frank," she said.
I've been thinking, too, of Rilke saying he just wanted
to be a final thing. The line between art and laundry
erased. I like to run the dishwasher at night
then place all the clean, clear glasses
in a neat row each morning.
I put my yellow coffee cup in the empty rack.
I drive to work and grade my papers
and peer over the cliff edge of our bank account,
muttering, "No stairs." In a myth,
Plato lets the dead choose
what life they will lead when next reborn.
It's taking Odysseus a long time. Of course it is.
He's looking for an uneventful life.
He's finding so few to choose from.

This one drawing a comb through his daughter's tangled hair.

So incredibly humbled and grateful to the good folks at @Poetry_Daily for featuring "Myth of the Bear" as today's poem of the day! And thank YOU for reading. 🙏
Deeply honored to be in the new @AmPoetryReview
It’s hard to know how to be there for people after major losses. I’ve always been terrible at it. But after my friend, Matt Kelsey, suffered the loss of his mother, then lost his father to COVID-19 soon after, I began sending 1/3
him strange little poetic questions just to keep in touch. Because he’s a brilliant poet, his answers charted a generous heart contending with what it means to be alive and to live through grief and longing.
