I want to share what happened to me, because I'm still in shock and I want to prevent from happening to others. Two weeks ago, an old friend reached out to catch up through @telegram I said yes. I've been job hunting, I miss my professional friends, and honestly, hearing from someone I hadn't talked to in a while felt good. We got on a video call. My mic glitched partway through, so I installed the update it asked for. I didn't think twice. It was my friend's face. My friend's voice. The conversation was normal. Nothing about it felt wrong. That update was malware. I was temporarily trading on a hot wallet @MetaMask . (I know, idiot move). While we talked, it was quietly draining everything I owned. 1.7 BTC. 10 ETH. Around $180,000. Gone before I even knew to be afraid. That money wasn't just numbers to me. It was five years of discipline, of saying no to things so I could say yes to my future. It was the down payment on a house. It was the freedom to retire early, or at least feel some sense of security. I used to tell people I was financially independent. I was proud of that. It was proof I could take care of myself. Now I open my wallet and see zero, and I feel something I've never let myself feel before: helpless. Defeated. Destitute. I'm unemployed right now too, actively interviewing, trying to hold it together while I process losing my savings and rebuild a career at the same time. Some days I feel stupid for trusting someone I've known for years. Most days I just feel numb, replaying what happened over and over. I'm sharing this publicly for another reason too. This wasn't a random phishing email or an obvious scam. It was a deepfake, real-time, on a video call, with a face and voice I'd known for years. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone, and I don't want the embarrassment of admitting that to stop me from warning other people. If a "friend" ever asks you to install something mid-call, especially anything framed as fixing audio or video, stop and verify through a separate channel first, a text, a call to a number you already had, another social media platform, anything outside that same conversation. Don't do it in the moment, no matter how real it looks or sounds. Now, here’s the hard part for me. I’m not asking because I think I'm owed anything. I'm asking because I don't know what else to do, and because I know there are people out there who understand how fast something like this can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you think you are. Attention follows what we can name: Language does more than describe reality. It influences what we notice, research and consider significant. A useful analogy comes from ecology. When we look at a forest, we can focus on the trees that are falling and measure their decline while missing the seedlings, roots, fungi and countless processes through which the forest continuously regenerates itself. Something similar may be occurring in human societies. Beneath the visible dynamics of systemic crisis, another layer of activity may be developing — one concerned with restoring relationships, capacities and the conditions for life. I propose calling this polyrenewal — as a working concept for this emerging systemic pattern. What is polyrenewal? By polyrenewal, I mean: the simultaneous emergence of multiple, interconnected practices that regenerate ecological, social, economic and democratic life. The poly matters. Polyrenewal does not describe a single movement, ideology or coordinated global programme. Its manifestations are diverse: feminist, ecological, Indigenous, cooperative, democratic, community-based and economic. They may use different vocabularies — care, solidarity, commons, regeneration, food sovereignty, degrowth, democracy, wellbeing, feminist economics — yet embody related principles. The proposition is not that these initiatives constitute one movement, but that they may represent different expressions of an emerging systemic pattern of renewal. This makes the concept particularly interesting in relation to polycrisis. We may be experiencing polycrisis and polyrenewal simultaneously. One describes interacting processes of breakdown in systems that have become increasingly extractive, unequal and ecologically destabilising. The other describes emerging practices that restore relationships and conditions on which collective and planetary wellbeing depend. The two processes coexist — and interact." Today is a dark day for freedom and democracy in Europe. General chat surveillance has been implemented in Brussels. A disgrace. The so-called Chat Control 1.0 cleared a crucial hurdle in the European Parliament today. This means platforms may once again be allowed to scan private messages, officially on a “voluntary” basis, but in practice this marks the return of indiscriminate monitoring of private communication. What makes this especially bitter is that a majority of the MEPs who voted were reportedly against it. According to Patrick Breyer, 314 MEPs voted against the regulation, 276 voted in favor and 17 abstained. And yet the rejection failed because it was not enough to have a simple majority of those voting. An absolute majority of all MEPs would have been required. That is the democratic scandal. When a majority of those present votes against a proposal and it still passes because a formal threshold is not reached, it does not feel like democratic decision-making to many citizens. It feels like a procedural trick. And it becomes even more problematic when you look at the context: Chat Control had already been rejected before. Yet the issue was put back on the agenda shortly before the summer break, through an urgent procedure, at a time when absences could become decisive. This is not just some technical regulation. It goes to the very core of private communication. It is about whether digital messages remain fundamentally private or whether platforms may systematically scan content again, without concrete suspicion, without a court order and without any individual cause. A free society must not turn private communication into a potential surveillance zone. Anyone who takes digital fundamental rights seriously cannot accept millions of innocent people being placed under general suspicion. Today, a dangerous signal was sent: fundamental rights can be hollowed out through procedural logic, timing and political tricks. Not through an open, clear and honest majority, but through a system in which absence effectively helps the supporters. This is a dark day for Europe. Not because the fight is over, but because today showed how easily digital fundamental rights come under pressure when surveillance logic, symbolic politics and institutional tricks come together. Anyone who wants a free internet, anyone who wants to protect private communication and anyone who takes democracy seriously should talk about this. Share this issue. Inform yourself. Look at who voted how. And never forget: freedom rarely disappears all at once. It disappears step by step, often in technical details, often in complicated procedures and often exactly when too few people are watching.
