“Atomic swap” does NOT mean the swap happens instantly. This is a common misunderstanding. In cross-chain execution, atomic is about the outcome. Think: Either both sides settle, or the conditions allow the funds to be recovered. Why does this matter? Because Chain A and Chain B are separate environments. A transaction succeeding on Chain A doesn't automatically guarantee that the transaction on Chain B will succeed. That's the problem atomic execution is designed to address. With HTLCs: 🔐 A shared secret connects the two sides. ⏱️ Timelocks provide a deadline. 🔗 The conditions coordinate the two settlements. If the required conditions are met, both sides can complete. If they aren't met within the required timeframe, the refund mechanism can kick in. So: Atomic ≠ instant. Atomic = coordinated, all-or-nothing settlement conditions. HTLC sounds complicated. The idea behind it is actually pretty simple. Imagine you’re swapping assets across two different chains. The big question is: How do both sides know when it’s safe to release the funds? HTLCs Hashed -Timelock Contracts - solve this using two conditions: 🔐 Hashlock A secret is required to claim the locked funds. ⏱️ Timelock If the swap isn't completed within the agreed time, the funds can be refunded. Now connect the two sides with the same secret hash. The result? You reveal the secret to claim the asset on one chain. That same secret becomes visible on-chain, allowing the other side to claim its asset on the other chain. If the conditions aren't met before the deadline, the funds can be recovered. Secret + deadline = a mechanism for coordinated cross-chain settlement. And this is one of the key pieces behind atomic swap execution.
