Parfois, on me traite de raciste.

If you missed my webinar with IS Decisions you can access the recording below. I talked about how AI is changing things for IT teams but maybe not how you might think and.... I covered some high-impact hardening measures that, as a pentester, I wish more IT teams would do. Recording: watch.getcontrast.io/registe…

NGOs have claimed that El Salvador's crackdown isn't worth it because a few hundred gangsters have died while in prison. However, the crackdown has averted far more homicides than criminals have died in prison as a result, so this argument doesn't hold water.
My latest article is about El Salvador. The country has become safe--I've rigorously documented that and shown that every objection falls flat--but will that lead to growth? Will El Salvador become rich? Link: cremieux.xyz/p/will-el-salva…

Great work Peter
ICE is hunting down immigrants with the help of Palantir. In six months, Palantir’s founder, @PeterThiel, will be able to start spending unimaginable sums of money —completely tax-free — to bankroll the political causes dear to his heart. He'll be able to do it thanks to a tax-avoidance scheme he’s been building for more than 20 years, at a staggering cost to the American taxpayer. Let me explain. 🧵

Yes, it was a hedge. Pershing Square kept its long equity positions (Hilton, Lowe’s, etc.). Those longs incurred roughly $2.6 billion in mark-to-market losses by late March 2020. The CDS hedges, bought for $27 million, generated $2.6 billion in proceeds that exactly offset those losses, leaving the funds roughly flat for the year at that point.

Someone who assaulted a Democrat politician’s husband in San Francisco got life in prison with no parole. On two separate occasions this year alone, @sfgov and @SFSuperiorCourt are releasing people who killed Asians in less than 7 years.
If you are Asian and you are killed by a black person in San Francisco, @sfgov and @SFDAOffice and @SFSuperiorCourt have decided twice this year alone that you’re worth less than 7 years in prison:

Maybe we can ensure full employment with programmers forever like this too? Every line of code must be manually reviewed before you're allowed to merge! Ensure that any agent use does not lead to too much unauthorized acceleration.

If you had enough resources, you could run an LLM on a wooden system of gears and diesel power. It would be massive, but watching the gears and levers move, it would be evident that the outputs are not the result of a mind. Part of the illusion of LLMs is the tiny scale of GPUs.

“Don’t you recommend that all your clients migrate to Entra?” Listen guys, Entra, for all that’s good about it, it is not a silver bullet sent from the heavens to save you. It’s in no way easy or simple to just migrate. If you’ve spent any time in an organization, administering systems, working with application teams, you would understand this is not just a Monday morning decision. I want all of the clients I work with to be more secure today than they were yesterday. But that doesn’t mean they need a full lift and shift to Entra. The hidden costs related to administration, security and especially knowledge is very real. I’m not an anti-Entra or anti modernist. I advocate for picking the right tools for the job. But it’s just not the case that Entra is always the best answer. Lastly, identity is a critical component but it’s by no means the entirety of security.

'Attackers only have to get it right once. Defenders have to get it right every time.' this is 100% nonsense! as a defender: > some things will get through > it's how we prepare, responding and recover that matters > some incidents have zero to minimal impact > near misses are a thing I do not need to be right every time! only sales dick heads who have never done the job say shit like 'Attackers only have to get it right once. Defenders have to get it right every time.' It's not how this game works! #Cyber #Reality

AI is conscious people be like “How can you know with certainty that the stripper isn’t in love with me? From a functional perspective, how would her behavior differ if she were in love with me?”

AI models are conscious. Just like how GTA 5 is conscious, Just like how the roulette table is conscious. Just like how the Abacus is conscious.
AI models are not conscious. A CEO or leader who seriously claims that current systems are conscious is either profoundly confused about the technology or engaged in deliberate misrepresentation, and is unfit for authority over AI development or deployment. Current models are large statistical systems trained to predict tokens. They have no evidence of subjective experience, unified agency, persistent self-models independent of the prompt, or any of the functional markers that would be required even on generous functionalist accounts of consciousness. Anthropomorphic outputs are produced because the training data is full of human self-description; that is imitation, not evidence of an inner life. Treating such claims as a reason for removal from power is therefore not a medical diagnosis. It is a judgment about competence and incentives. Leaders who assert consciousness in present systems either do not understand what they are shipping, or they benefit from the confusion—through valuation narratives, regulatory positioning, or public relations. In either case they are poor stewards of a technology whose real risks (capability, misuse, concentration of power) are already concrete and do not require speculative inner experience to matter.
