Walking out of shul on Monday, I picked up a pamphlet by an organization called the Jewish Board, supported by the @UJAfedNY. The title was "When Safety Feels Shaken: Support and Practical Tools." What advice did the pamphlet give? Well, first, that tucking in your Star of David necklace "can be a safety decision made from strength." Because nothing says strong Jew more clearly than hiding who you are. Then, the pamphlet advises us to "choose your moments to speak up," because staying silent when attacked is also a virtue. And then finally, the pamphlet urges us to "move before acting publicly," just to make sure we think twice before standing up to our attackers. It's impossible to exaggerate how bonkers this is. Intellectually weak, morally revolting, historically disastrous, the result of decades of limp and deflating therapy-speak. So once again: Jews don't need to hide who they are or think twice before speaking. They need to be openly and proudly Jewish, and live robust and visibly Jewish lives. They need to remember that proud Jews are never guaranteed safety, but they are guaranteed freedom, the freedom to be who they truly are. And they -- we -- need and deserve organizations that advocate real self-defense. We don't need any more retarded psychobabble. We need guns.
