In this 1989 recording, the Bee Gees are no longer the young men who recorded the song in 1967. You can hear the difference in their vocals. The voices are still very controlled, but they lack the youthful radiance of before and are a little heavier.
That really suits the song.
"Massachusetts" is always about looking back and feeling the lingering presence of a place left behind. Singed by more mature voices, it's expressed more authentically.
The performance isn't more spectacular, but it has things that the original recording never had.
