We're back to paganism because of our metaphysical forgetfulness. Christianity solved paganism, as evidenced by history. We no longer truly internalize Christianity. Or perhaps the opposite is true, we're Christians so overmechanical that we've forgotten it's core.
As Schmitt pointed out, liberalism, by trying to erase the friend / enemy distinction, produces an even more extreme and existential version, 'human' vs 'anti-human'.

I think what happened is that in attempt to control and regulate the mystical, Christianity in the west was turned into a sort of formal logic system, which cannot make sense because the mystical is not logical by definition. This process lead to widespread intellectual discrediting because, again, the mystical is not logical. At the same time, the mystical did not cease to exist, but all the tools that were used to deal with it became degraded and passed into the real of barbarous and degenerate 'occultism' and paganism.

Yes, the axioms that give rise to any rational systems are themselves pre-rational. We lost axiom magic. The formal logic system that substituted itself for Christianity only had to appear like Christianity and offer repeatable mechanistic power in an opensource kind of way to get some adoption in the masses. In this sense we are an entire society of fallen mechanical sorcerers. We're stuck in the worldview magic of the past, embodying the spells of the philosophers and occultists of the past.
