I think what happened is that in attempt to control and regulate the mystical, Christianity in the west was turned into a sort of formal logic system, which cannot make sense because the mystical is not logical by definition. This process lead to widespread intellectual discrediting because, again, the mystical is not logical. At the same time, the mystical did not cease to exist, but all the tools that were used to deal with it became degraded and passed into the real of barbarous and degenerate 'occultism' and paganism.
