Seems like a lot of people prefer self-hosting.

Vercel was good a few years ago. But they are getting very expensive. I’m currently looking into Laravel Cloud (and yes, it’s not only for Laravel apps, you can also host node.js apps).

It has changed a lot. And I’d say it is definitely usable, if you are a bit tech-savvy. I’d say there are even distributions which are good for everyone, none tech people.

100%!! But not only Laravel, you can host your node.js apps, too ;)

So far, I can really recommend it. It's such a good developer experience, absolutely peak support and you can host all kind of apps with them, not only Laravel apps.

100%!! It's often underestimated how much effort that is. Where do you host your stuff (app, database, etc...)?

So you self-host it on a VPS, right?

I can't really tell about the costs, yet since I just moved over some projects. What's really interesting is their "scale-to-zero" functionality. Your apps can "sleep" after a specified time (e.g. 5 minutes) if there's no traffic. During sleep, you are not billed. Awake in <500ms. This can really save you a lot of money, especially for smaller side-projects.
