Orthopedic beds in every corner, warm blankets everywhere, quiet nights, gentle mornings, a home full of patience. We thought we were giving him comfort for his final days. Calyx had other plans. Week one, he slept — the kind of deep, safe sleep that only happens when fear is finally gone. Week two, something changed in his eyes; you could tell he realized this place was his. Week three, he found the toy. Nothing new or fancy, just a small stuffed one. But to him, it became everything. That's when the "tired old dog" disappeared. The Pitbull who barely moved now trots around proudly with his toy. The one who slept all day now wakes up early, carrying it like a prize. Every night he curls up just like this, holding it close, like it's the most important thing in his world. That's when it hit us — he wasn't just slowing down because of age. He was missing warmth. Connection. Something to call his own. Now he still moves a little slower, still naps a lot. But he also steals food when no one's looking, beats us to the door, and that toy never leaves his side. We thought we were preparing for an ending. Instead, he reminded us that sometimes love doesn't just comfort a life — sometimes it quietly brings it back.

Sutcliffe was pretty intense on the day he pitched. So Eric Davis takes him deep and Paul O'Neill takes him deep right after that. So Sutcliffe is all mad, and pitching coach Billy Connors comes out to the mound and Sutcliffe yells at him: "I know I gave up back-to-back home runs, but get your ass back in the dugout and tell Zimmer to settle down too!" Billy Connors looks at him and says: "I know you have everything under control, Rick. I just wanted to give that guy running the fireworks a little more time to reload." With apologies to Mr. Sutcliffe, my favorite baseball story!

In May 2016, 15-year-old Karinya “Yaya” Chen was in hospice care in Austin, Texas after years of fighting cancer. She had tickets to see Florence The Machine, but by the night of the concert, she was simply too sick to go. So the people at Hospice Austin reached out to the band. And Florence Welch came to her. Florence and guitarist Rob Ackroyd walked into Karinya’s room and gave her the concert she couldn't make it to. They sang “Shake It Out” and “Dog Days Are Over,” with Karinya singing and harmonizing right alongside them. A few months later, Karinya lost her battle with cancer at just 15 years old. But for one afternoon, none of that seemed to matter. There was just a young girl, one of her favorite singers, a guitar, a room full of people who loved her... and music. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can become one of the biggest moments of someone's life. This is what being human is supposed to look like.🙏
