there was a time where many companies, esp news orgs, said to Google that they didn't want to appear in search. very quickly they came crawling back because of the loss in demand. no doubt the same thing will play out here. No sane business will say no to the incredible amount of demand + traffic that will come from agents over time.

I can't predict the AI future, and I'm very unsure about what the right strategy or policies should be moving forward. What I do know is that people who scoff at the idea that we may be in grave danger have not read enough about AI.

consumer hardware is startup hard mode. speakers are hard mode on hard mode. source: my last startup was a consumer smart camera.
main problem is price anchoring. amazon sells echos below cost because the device is a distribution play. google does the same. so the typical price of a smart speaker in most people’s heads is super low, like <$50.
for a startup you have no scale, so your BOM is 2-3x. and nobody wants a subscription for a speaker. so you get hardware margins and revenue isn’t even recurring.
on why alexa/homepod/nest still have mediocre AI for their speakers i agree it's embarrassing.
i think if someone pulls this off it’s openai. they’ve got design taste w jony + a strong brand, so they can charge more. they’re big enough to subsidize if they need to. they can bundle the subscription w chatgpt plus/pro which ppl already pay for and treat this as an incremental acquisition play. and their AI will ofc actually be good.
Amazon and Google sold ~600M+ Alexa and Nest devices that could barely do anything except playing music and setting timers (and even that worked reliably maybe 30% of the time). Now we have effectively AGI-level intelligence, but nobody seems to be building smart speakers around it. Why?

This is similar to how I work in Claude code. I create a "Group" for a long running stream of work. I have one session that creates a plan of attack and fork that session for each sub-task. When the sub task is done, that chat is archived.
Excited to try this out, and remove all the manual coordination I currently do.

There is a significant correlation between the capability of AI tools to solve pure mathematical problems, and their ability to potentially perform malicious acts such as exploiting security weaknesses in an online system, and the danger is very real that some major AI-triggered cybersecurity incident could occur in the near future which would be far more significant event in world history than, say, the production of a solution to all remaining Millennium prize problems. I am certainly supportive of efforts to slow down the development and release of even more capable models, and to impose genuine regulation on the industry, although the political environment currently is not exactly conducive to such policies, to put it mildly."

Instinct and Muse are both magical personal assistants and the browser use + auth product execution is 🎯
But in the long run staying within one AI ecosystem will be the way most people go i think. Sharing context manually is annoying and feels unnecessary. I just want Claude to get the missing features asap.

one reason i dislike the doomer label is that apparently you're a doomer even if you put a low probability on something really bad happening. just saying the risk is nonzero, or saying it in language that isn't comms-friendly gets you attacked.
this is especially ironic bc tech people usually hold candor and first-principles thinking in such high regard. ai risk is the one topic where you're not supposed to say things straight and go pr-friendly instead. the one topic where reasoning by analogy with constant comparisons to the agricultural + industrial revolutions is the preferred form of argument.
AI isn’t going to wipe out humans. But AI doomers have a shot at hamstringing the most incredible advancement for humanity since the steam engine. We can’t let that happen.

He is getting slammed but would you rather the people in charge are able to speak their mind or not? Would you prefer it if Anthropic fires people who express dissent? The alternative is infinitely worse.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.
