If inheritance tax is due, the bereaved family has 6 months to pay it.
After that, interest is charged at 7.75%.
The value of most people’s estate is in their house - and from April, their pension.
Giving only 6 months to pay - and then charging that rate of interest is simply unfair.

The folly of positive law. By what right does anyone coercively tax my access to information so they can run an entertainment and propaganda business? Why do I owe anyone else a living, beyond security the essentials of defence, justice, law enforcement?
The government is considering scrapping the TV licence and replacing it with an £11 a month levy added straight onto every broadband bill, under proposals from the Social Market Foundation.
Nothing about that is optional. Right now, at least in theory, you can choose not to pay if you don't own a TV or use BBC services. Under this model, every household with an internet connection pays automatically, whether they watch a single minute of BBC content or not.
Calling this "abolishing" the licence fee is a lie. It's converting a fee some people could avoid into a charge nobody can escape, collected through the one utility almost every home in Britain now needs. If people don't want to fund the BBC, they should have the right to say no. This proposal exists specifically to remove that choice.
