Actually, he still screwed it up where he could: signed Sheffield (love Sheffield!) but instead of Vlad? Wouldn’t cough up the $ for Beltran. Steinbrenner was good in the 1970s because he supplemented an already good core with good free agents. He was awful after that.

Problem is they never held on to their good, young pitching long enough to have a good staff. And when they really needed a #2 behind Guidry by the mid 80s, they turned Righetti into a reliever.

Traded all the pitching talent (Drabek, Deshaies et al) and colluded with other owners so didn’t sign guys they needed (Morris, Fisk etc). Fired all his managers, so zero stability in the organization. Yankees rebuilt when he was kicked out of baseball and couldn’t screw it up.
I wouldn’t go as far as “unmitigated disaster,” but his impatience led to a lot of underperforming teams thru the ‘80s. People forget how fans used to boo him back then. The ‘90s dynasty put the fans back in his corner and made him beloved as he aged.

Not arguing against O’Neill or Posada. O’Neill played on teams with Eric Davis, Barry Larkin, Derek Jeter, and Bernie Williams and I never got the sense watching him that any of those guys was clearly better than him. He was truly great.

George Steinbrenner was a very mixed bag as an owner, and extremely overrated. He was great when he first bought the team and could build on an excellent foundation. Otherwise he was an unmitigated disaster.

Not enough people talk about Graig Nettles:
• 390 HR, 67.9 WAR, 6x AS, 2x WAR leader
• More HR than HOF 3Bs Santo, Brett, Rolen
• More WAR than Banks, Killebrew, Winfield
• Led NYY to championships in 1977 & 1978
• Was named 1981 ALCS MVP (1.488 OPS)
• Never struck out 100x in 22 seasons
• 2x GG, played 20,625 innings at 3B
Somehow, he never received more than 8.3% of the vote from the BBWAA, falling off the HOF ballot after receiving just 4.7% in 1997, his fourth year of eligibility. An injustice!

I’ll take a prime George Brett — especially in the playoffs — over anyone ever at the position. But Brett is not the bar. I think of 3B as offensively much closer to 2B than to 1B, and believe baseball history beats this out.

There is a real Hall of Fame case to be made for Nettles: he played the most underrepresented position in the Hall of Fame because it’s perceived as more of an offensive position than it really is. Nettles produced offense, all time elite 3B defense, and was great in the playoffs
Happy Birthday to Graig Nettles. A 6X All Star, 2X Gold Glove, 1981’ ALCS MVP and 2X WS Champion (77-78’), he played 22 seasons (1967-88’). He hit .248/.329/.421, .750 OPS, 110 OPS+, 390 HR, 1314 RBI, 1193 Runs, 1088 Walks, 328 Doubles, 2225 Hits, 3779 TB, 68.0 WAR. He led the AL in HR 1X and WAR 2X. Considered by many to be one of the greatest defensive 3B of All Time, he often was overshadowed by Brooks Robinson. He hit 30+ HR 2X and recorded 90+ RBI 4X. He ranks 66th on the All Time HR list, T-105th in RBI, 92nd in Walks and 183rd in Hits.

Exactly! The idea that first base can be played by the greatest number of players has always been conflated with the idea that defense at first base isn’t important — even though it affects the defense at every other infield position.
