In 2016, Dr. Katherine Horton gave a plain-English explanation of what she called remote neural monitoring. Her basic argument was that the brain produces measurable electrical activity, different actions and mental processes create recognizable patterns, and increasingly sensitive technology combined with computing could potentially identify those patterns and feed information back into the nervous system. She discusses reading electrical brain activity, reconstructing signal patterns, EEG, visual and auditory information, motor activity, subvocalization, and the possibility of using electromagnetic signals not only to monitor neural activity but to influence it.
