1. Cancer: JAMA Oncology projects ~1 million missed screenings after the 2027 eligibility shock — ~406k mammograms, ~680k colorectal, ~67k lung — and thousands of cancers caught too late. Clinics are already making chemo patients prove they “deserve” Medicaid.
2. Seniors: ~1.3 million low-income Medicare beneficiaries (dual-eligibles) lose Medicaid help with premiums, deductibles, and drugs. Nursing-home minimum staffing rule delayed. When states get a $900B haircut, home-and-community care is the first thing they slash — that’s how grandma leaves her house and never comes back.
3. Disabled: exemptions exist on paper. In practice, if you’re not “disabled enough” for SSI/SSDI — the 2.6 million adults with disabilities on Medicaid who aren’t on federal disability — you still have to document 80 hours. Six-month redeterminations will kick people who miss a form, not people who got a job.
4. Veterans: VA care is not a substitute for Medicaid wraparound. Disabled American Veterans warned rural and under-65 vets will get crushed. Only a 100% rating is a clean exemption. Less than a quarter of service-disabled vets have that. Lose Medicaid and you lose the telehealth, specialists, and meds that sat on top of VA.
Yale/Penn: 51,000 preventable deaths a year when you stack coverage loss + dual-eligible drug help + nursing-home staffing rollback + expired ACA credits.
