I recently went through a translation of Musashi’s Book of Five Rings.
The introduction chronicled the evolution of swordsmanship and martial arts in general from pragmatic battlefield necessities to sports, historical curiosities, and hobbies. It was interesting to hear how in the post-WW2 occupation when martial arts were banned, Judo was represented as equivalent to western wrestling, and Kendo later to western fencing.
The poignant undercurrent for me is that I can see many programming skills following that path.
There are probably dozens of people reading this that remember hand assembling opcodes to hex and still have some magic numbers burned into their memory, but even the small group of people still programming in assembly today (hey, @FFmpeg !) don’t work at that primitive level now.
AI is making many other programming skills much less critical. We aren’t there yet, but carefully writing code completely by hand is moving from a -jitsu to a -do. Code-do? Codo?
That’s ok! The retro computing scene is delightful, full of people building and exercising old skills for the love of it.
But don’t be the out of touch Kung Fu master, heir to lifetimes of tradition, that gets mauled by an amateur MMA fighter.
Musashi would probably have been pretty enthusiastic about assault rifles.

EA AI safetyism increasingly looks like Marxism-Leninism for the algorithmic age.
The old vanguard claimed privileged knowledge of the inevitable course of History. The new one claims privileged knowledge of the probabilistic course of Humanity.
Both use an elaborate intellectual framework to reach the same political conclusion: a small group of enlightened people must constrain everyone else for their own good.
That has never lead to anything except monumental human suffering.

The entire city of San Francisco is spooked and on edge due to AI safety shit, it’s insane how much it’s bleeding into my everyday life. Like I was at my bus stop and I notice a guy looking really stressed out so I said hey, are you worried about misaligned AI too? He took out an AirPod and said “what?” So I said you know stuff like agent swarms, AI escaping RL sandboxes, existential risk. He paused his Barstool podcast and said “sorry, what? What are you talking about?” Just the mention of this stuff made him too anxious to speak, I think. So I said I know man, what?! is my reaction to all this too, and then asked him what his p(doom) is. He then said “dude is this some gay thing or something because I have no fucking clue what you’re asking me” then he got on the bus. People are not handling all this news well. It’s really affecting us. All of us.

The issue raised in The Rehearsal is whether the authority gradient affects copilots' willingness to assert themselves at critical junctures and captains' willingness to hear copilots in those moments.
Neither the question nor the answer dealt with this well-recognized cockpit issue. Nor the NTSB's analysis of the issue of what was lacking in current training and its recommendation of role-playing to ameliorate this situation.

I must admit, the two mainstream archetypes for womanhood - “feminine and hollow” vs. “masculine girlboss” - are both so uninspiring. Your female ancestors labored & sacrificed & bled; they helped to tame the wilderness into civilization for you; were they all unfeminine?
I’d love to see the revival of feminine archetypes that enable a depth of living. The vision of femininity as a shallow, entirely soft, consumption-driven existence is just a polar inversion of feminism, affirming the idea that to live seriously and do anything interesting with your time requires you to become masculine
Nature intended for beautiful women to float through life effortlessly, having fun, doing pilates, not partaking in the plebeian existence of professional striving. It is a recognition that female beauty in itself is enough, that it does not need status markers to validate nor reward it.
This is what is so unsettling about the SF “hot” tech girl discourse. Striving for money & prestige is inherently masculine, antithetical to the feminine ideal. When women who boast of their Stanford pedigree & VC funding also boast of their “hotness,” they’re trying to subvert nature’s will: a futile endeavor to conflate achievement & beauty as a singular force.
But nature rejects this heresy, as it demands a masculine-feminine polarity. Ultimately even these women implicitly admit that despite their impressive resumes, the primary metric by which potential mates will judge them by is beauty & feminine energy.
