It's unreal to see two prime examples of the American Dream in action - a guy who became super famous because he's dumb & funny, and an immigrant with a weird name & a minority faith becoming mayor of America's largest city - argue that it's dead. Total lack of self-awareness.
Theo Von: “Do you think the American Dream is still alive?” Zohran Mamdani: “It feels like you have to luck out in some big way. In many ways I feel like it’s why a lot of people play the lottery. For many it feels like their only chance. People think they have better odds playing the lottery than making it in their own life. What does that say about the country we live in?”

The U.S. economy is picking up speed: business investment jumped 9% in the second quarter, while corporate profits soared 20.8% from a year earlier. AI and data centers are driving a new wave of investment. The doom-and-gloom crowd keeps missing the story. wsj.com/opinion/u-s-economy-…

I can see that yields rose alongside oil price this year. But the idea that it's the oil price itself that drove the yields increase still feels a bit unsatisfying to me, as it lacks a clear mechanism.... Through inflation? Yet inflation compensation did not increase much. Through expectations that central banks won't look through the oil shock and hike? Perhaps. But this is not synchronized across countries, which are all hit by the oil shock... Through stronger growth despite/because the oil shock? ...ok this one is weird because only US is a net petroleum exporter among countries that also see similar magnitudes of yields increases. By process of elimination, this leaves pretty much one that can explain everything at once.
Yields are rising in Europe as well because of higher energy prices. Global energy prices need to come down for global yields to come down.

It seems that the basic stakes in the Strait of Hormuz matter have not been effectively communicated to the public. In short, obtaining direct control over the strait would allow the USA to *directly* control world energy supply and almost give us a "kill switch" over China. Like the Russian failure in Ukraine, this is a matter of world-historical importance and very significantly *determines* the intensity of the future global military struggle. A USA victory in the strait would massively reduce the chances of Chinese aggression upon Taiwan, and would thus tend to prevent further escalation towards an actual World War III.

Kumon and other successful after-school tutoring organizations always use traditional drill and practice to catch kids up in math. I once attended a lecture by a well-known math ed guru, who was selling the "new way" to teach math. My colleague asked her: "Why do you think places like Kumon always use traditional teaching - like math drills and worksheets? If your approach is so much better, why don't they use your approach?" She replied: "It's nostalgia. It makes parents feel good to see things being taught the way they were taught." The real reason is that Kumon is a paid service. They will lose business if they do not deliver a product that works. Public schools do not face such consequences. They can just keep doing whatever they want, listening to the gurus, and buying their products. And parents have to keep sending their kids. This is the sad tragedy of public education. @mattyglesias

I'm not envious of many people in this world, but I am of people who made it to four (or five!). We stopped at three, but if we had met earlier, there coulda-woulda-shoulda have been more. Be fruitful and multiply!
Have your fourth kid. Go into debt if you have to. I did (and got out) 😆

America's elite is of such high quality - far sightedness, extreme agency, relentless, patriots.
Ken Griffin, a Harvard Alumnus, just gave $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon says the gift is the result of two years of talks with Griffin. Here’s Griffin talking about Harvard a little over two years ago, in January 2024: He asks if Harvard will return to educating young people to be leaders or remain “lost in the wilderness” of DEI, and says, “I’m not interested in supporting the institution.” He had just given $300 million to Harvard in 2023.

NEW: Trump accounts to be automatically set up for every kid in America under 18yrs old. So that's 63 million + 7 existing = 70 million kids. Wow. Unclear whether they'll get the $1000 $SPYM seed, but just having an account allows stock donations to flow right in there (which imo is best solution to closing wealth gap) and this solves the issue of certain families not enrolling themselves via @reilly_cait

The median retired couple gets ~$46,000 cash from the government every single year, it's adjusted for inflation annually, and they have the gall to complain about property taxes, because they've artificially inflated the value of their homes by blocking development. And now, in order to keep the gravy train flowing from the insolvency that they've known about for decades, the leading proposal is to raise taxes on working families. Madness. Absolute madness.
What this chart leaves out is that the median retiree gets a $1915 check from the government every single month.

Didn’t quite realize all the innovative manufacturing decisions Tesla is making to reach its $20k target for Cybercab: - elimination of cross-car wiring - 48 volt power system - electrically actuated brakes & steering - modular assembly (instead of full-body) - rare-earth-free motor - elimination of paint shop step - gigacasting (70 parts down to 1) - DC-only charging
An Ode to Tesla's Cybercab austinvernon.site/blog/cyber… Speeding up AVs can prevent millions of deaths. The Cybercab is a major advancement in automotive manufacturing technology, being an order of magnitude more scalable than any previous car design. A true feat of engineering.

Maybe people aren’t having fewer kids because they suddenly stopped wanting families. Maybe we made parenting completely insane. Perfect pregnancy. Perfect diet. Perfect school. Perfect activities. Perfect house. Perfect career. Never yell. Never use screens. Never make a mistake. Then we wonder why young adults look at parenthood and say, “No thanks.” Kids don’t need perfect parents. They need present ones. Maybe fixing the birth-rate crisis starts with making normal parenting normal again.
