Riding the huggingface AI safety wave to justify a crackdown on open source is abominable. Not only was an open-source platform victimized in that attack, but they relied on open-source models to defend. These people know this, of course. They simply don't care.

I feel like the extent of the government/NGO Internet censorship apparatus is extensively underrated by people interested in AI safety, in particular how it pattern matches to calls for neutral third parties to people of the political persuasion who were targets of the censorship

Anybody discussing regulating AI should demonstrate that they have even the faintest, shallowest hint of how it actually works. Instead of coordinating around boosting doomer hype that is clearly, unmistakably, obviously motivated by something other than "saving humans."

Now try that with humans of a certain ideological variety. The last time I suggested this to one I received a death threat. And people wonder why so many turn to AI.
