The recent IITB tragedy has started big discussions, with some calling for overhauling the system and some fiercely defending it. I worry that these polarized debates will suck all our energy and produce nothing. Let's focus on small, practical changes that improve the system.

Only a small fraction of the cheating cases are actually caught. Thus, if the consequence of cheating is not very painful, students may be tempted to take the chance. Such a policy will hurt the overwhelming majority who are happy to earn their grades through hard work. 7/11

The fear of a delayed degree or the loss of job placement in the final year is probably too harsh for many students. As argued above, a mild but more certain and instant punishment will likely be equally or more effective in reducing cheating and maintaining academic standards.

One challenge in this approach is that it requires more effort from the instructor in making an air-tight exam. In an average exam in IIT, it takes 3-4 hours of extra effort in creating multiple paper versions and seat assignments and constantly running around in the exam hall.

In reviewing grants, reviewers spend considerable effort in identifying pros and cons. Why not share these insights with the authors for future improvements? Sadly this isn't happening with many Indian funders! Should it be made mandatory for govt agencies to share the reviews?
