The investigation remains ongoing. Traffic in and around the airport may be impacted, with vehicle traffic currently being diverted to the arrivals level. Travelers are encouraged to allow additional time and follow the direction of law enforcement and airport personnel. We appreciate the public’s patience as deputies continue their work at the scene.

I spoke with @CBSMiami this morning about yesterday’s Amazon Prime Air cargo incident at @iflymia and the incredible response from @MiamiDadeFire and the @MiamiDade_SO , who responded within just 30 seconds. As operations work toward returning to normal, travelers should continue checking directly with their airlines for the latest information on delays or cancellations before heading to MIA.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis issued the following statement following the tragic aircraft incident at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon: “Today, our community experienced a heartbreaking tragedy at Miami International Airport. An Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft overran the runway, crossed the airport perimeter and struck multiple vehicles outside the airport. At this time, officials have confirmed that five people have tragically lost their lives and five others have been injured, including three who remain in critical condition. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones today and to everyone who has been impacted by this terrible incident. We are praying for those who remain hospitalized and for their full recovery. I am incredibly grateful to the men and women of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and all of the first responders and emergency personnel who immediately responded to this scene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded within just 30 seconds of receiving the call, demonstrating the extraordinary readiness and professionalism of the men and women who serve our community. The surrounding communities, including the cities of Virginia Gardens and Miami Springs, are directly adjacent to the airport and our office remains in close communication with our neighboring municipalities as the investigation and emergency response continue. The area surrounding NW 67th Avenue and Perimeter Road remains secured as local and federal authorities conduct their investigation. I urge residents to avoid the area, allow first responders and investigators to do their work, and follow all instructions from law enforcement. There are still many questions that need to be answered about what happened today. We will continue closely monitoring this investigation and working with our federal, County and municipal partners as additional information becomes available. I feel much safer walking down a street lined with American flags. If our flag makes you feel unsafe, you have lost sight of what it represents.
