David Shoebridge off his rocker with absolutely no evidence, just wild claims and hand waving: “We know that One Nation didn’t create itself. It’s the classic post turtle. It sits on a post. You know it didn’t get there by itself. You wonder what it’s doing there. Labor has created the circumstances for One Nation and Labor is not the answer”. A bit far fetched, Dave 🙄 It was actually John Howard who created the circumstances for the creation of One Nation when he and the Queensland Liberal Liberal Party withdrew their support for Pauline Hanson before the 1996 federal election - because of the derogatory comments she made about Aboriginal people. Her name was already on the ballot as a Liberal candidate because it was so close to the federal election and it couldn’t be changed. Hanson won the seat of Oxley primarily because people thought they were voting for a Liberal candidate. After she won she became an Independent MP. Pauline Hanson subsequently founded the One Nation Party soon after in 1997 and worked hard to develop the craft of developing her notoriety by giving a voice to resentment - particularly white resentment. John Howard allowed it to happen. Hanson’s hardline right-wing agenda outed the hardline conservative voice of saying the quiet part out loud - and Howard used that to try to court those outliers into the Liberal Party. Howard gave Hanson a voice. He capitalised on her position. Once that toxic red genie was out of the bottle, there was no going back. So, Shoebridge can grandstand all he wants about it “being Labor’s fault” as he attempts to reinvent the Bandt combative stance that worked so well for him in the 2025 election, but Shoebridge can’t blame Labor for Hanson with any credibility. The Liberal Party gave Hanson her start. The Liberal party fuelled the hardline right-wing by allowing it to not only happen, but continued to fuel her popularity. She never went away. Now she has even more right-wing wealthy friends. Larissa Waters was a good leader. Shoebridge is desperation wrapped in grandiosity.
