One of the aspects of this last World Cup most discussed on European television, at least, was its political dimension. @AugursNFT has, in previous works - such as the masterpiece 'Roberto Baggio', minted on objktone in 2023 (simply one of the best videos I’ve seen minted on any chain) - managed to express the political dimension of football better than almost anyone, IMO. Now, with his new collection The World Cup and The Image Machines, curated by @postanika and released through the @objktlabs gallery, he sets aside his eloquent, precise narratives to explore the aesthetics of football - more specifically, football as seen through television today. There is so much to say about football, the World Cup, and the spectacle surrounding it. But the sheer fact that more than a billion people around the world can be tuned in to watch the same thing, at the same time, through a screen is mind-blowing to me. Henrique goes against the perfection of the broadcast image: the best angle, the highest resolution, the perfect slow motion, every detail that escapes the human eye and can only be captured by machines and algorithms. Instead, the five videos in this collection put those images through multiple glitching and processing stages, disrupting the seamlessness of the broadcast and making us look again at the image machine itself. His love for football, combined with his sensitivity to the political structures behind the spectacle, is once again striking. So are his visual experiments between code and analogue processes.
