Today’s web dev stack: review a couple of follower startups, fix mobile CSS, compare forum software, chase payment providers, find a lawyer. I even wrote some code, by hand, doesn't happen so often anymore. What a day:)

If you were starting a small niche forum in 2026 and deliberately NOT using Discord, what would you build it on? I spent part of today looking around and I’m still attracted to the old-school stuff. Proper threads. Searchable pages. URLs that still exist next month💪

I would probably use Discourse. Boring, searchable, and every thread gets a real URL.

Its definitely a top option Mikhail

I’ve been reviewing a few projects people from X have sent me lately and I want more of this in my feed. If you’re actively building some small SaaS, game, PHP thing, automation, hardware project or weird tool nobody asked for, say hi. DM me if it's not public yet but need feedback:)

A lot of founders think that in order to improve their visibility, they need ads. This can be a very expensive trap, because ads aren't cheap. If you haven't analyzed your conversion rate to understand where your bottleneck is, more ads aren't necessarily going to change anything. And the good news is that you can analyze your conversion rate for free, just by creating content. If you get 100 views on a piece of content and 0 conversions, an ad that gives you 100000 views is still not going to fix the problem. If you get 100 views and 3 conversions, and you struggle to get views but once you get them your conversion rate is decent, then yes, ads might be a good solution. And yes, momentum can improve conversion. But if your current conversion is zero, or too low to create any meaningful growth, ads aren't momentum. They're an expensive way to scale a problem.

Reviewing someone else’s pre-launch app is a good reminder that you only get one first-time-user brain. Once you know where everything is in your own product, you’re useless at spotting half the confusing stuff. Watching yourself get lost in somebody else’s app is very educational:)

It's the same for all of us mate. Always get some friends to have a go too.

One UI test I should do more often: open the site on an actual phone and try to use it with one thumb. Not inspect mode. Not a resized desktop browser. Found things today that looked completely fine at mobile width in devtools and still felt crap in my hand.

Whatever you use, one thing is important. Offering users a familiar UI. That creates the feeling of being at home. If the content is good but the UI feels strange, it's going to alienate users.

the code is the easy part honestly. Laravel just gets out of the way and lets you ship. hard part is prying people out of the discord sludge 😄

Same here. There’s more going on with the old stuff than people give it credit for. Nothing beats that nostalgic feeling. Proper threads. A URL you can send someone next month. Search that actually finds the post. I just like that feeling. Discord’s a room. A forum’s a record. 👍

I'd probably start with Discourse. Search, proper threads, and long-lived URLs are hard to beat.

I did look at Discourse but decided I wanted something simpler, lighter. Still looking but narrowing the options:)

Code is rarely what slows a small project down right before launch. At the moment I’m waiting on Stripe, waiting on Tebex and lining up legal advice. The actual software is sitting there like “can we go now?”😂

And then the next step: code is rarely slowing the project down from revenue. So software is sitting there being like, "Okay our job is done now. Where's the money?"

I've found the same thing with forms and checkout flows. everything looks perfectly aligned until you try doing the whole thing one-handed.

uhmm, so you mean the payment stuffs, or legal stuffs will be the key reasons that prevent small projects from quick release?
