#BREAKING The Supreme Court is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with @DHSgov’s expanded voter citizenship verification system while the legal fight continues. The Court granted the administration’s emergency request to stay a lower court ruling that blocked changes to DHS’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements — or SAVE — program. The revamped system allows state and local election officials to check citizenship using Social Security Administration records in addition to DHS immigration data and allows officials to run bulk searches of multiple voters or voter applicants at once. In its unsigned opinion, the Court said the challengers’ claims “likely lack merit,” adding: “Under section 1373(c), the Federal Government has an obligation to respond to requests from state and local election officials seeking to verify the citizenship of voters. The order below prevents the Federal Government from using the program it believes is best suited to the task.” The ruling means the expanded SAVE system can remain in use ahead of the 2026 midterm elections while the case proceeds through the courts. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, arguing the Court was not giving enough weight to potential harm to lawful voters who could be incorrectly flagged and forced to provide additional proof of citizenship. Important: This is NOT a final ruling on whether the expanded SAVE program is legal. The Supreme Court is temporarily allowing the administration to use it while the appeal continues.
