Exciting news — my latest paper has been accepted for publication in New Ideas in Psychology! 📘 Title: Consciousness: The Control of the Perception of Quality (CoPoQ) 👤 Author: Dr. Rupert Young 🧠 Journal: New Ideas in Psychology (Elsevier) This paper introduces a new theory of consciousness grounded in Perceptual Control Theory (PCT). It proposes that consciousness is not merely about information or representation, but about the control of perceived quality — integrating qualia, valence, and performance into a unified, functional model. The CoPoQ framework explains: why we are conscious — and why we are not during Flow states, how learning and awareness are intertwined, and how value and meaning naturally emerge from adaptive control of our perceptions. This work challenges traditional information-based models such as Integrated Information Theory and Global Workspace Theory, and offers a biologically grounded, testable account of conscious experience.
