Frontier labs should give top universities real access to frontier models, and structure AI safety to be an open scientific problem. Can we detect deception, dangerous capabilities, or loss of control before they matter? Open research compounds. It scales fast when top AI safety researchers learn and build on each other.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. Nobody wants to read a paragraph to book a seat. Excited to launch Custom UI Components for @cresta's AI Agent, expanding what our agents can do beyond language! Digital channels have a capability voice does not: they can render an interface.. Often, a visual component is the fastest way for a customer to express intent: selecting a time from a calendar, comparing plans side by side, choosing a seat from a cabin map. They shouldn't have to translate prose into action! Cresta’s Custom UI Components are not hard-coded additions bolted onto the chat experience. Each one is *generated* in Cresta Conductor (our agent-building-agent) at design time, alongside the agent's prompts and tools. So the UI component and the agent’s behavior evolve together. Each interaction also has a plain-text representation. When a customer selects seat 14C, that action becomes part of the conversation record, preserving the state and context when the interaction moves to a human or another system. The next generation of AI agents will not be measured only by how well they answer. They will be measured by whether the experience actually resolves what the customer came to do. I heard the greatest story of promotion incentive hacking at FAANG today. A very well known Engg VP knew that: a) you can only really be promoted in ~2 yrs. the few cycles after a promotion are pointless b) you are promoted on your impact, complexity, scope, leadership and independence In order to make sure his entire team gets promoted in due time, he would just ensure the ~25% of his team 2yrs into their level and "up for promo" this cycle take credit for the work of the entire team, with their consent, gets promoted, and repeat round robin. Over the years, everyone on his team would get promoted always on time leading to others wanting to join his team. His headcount would keep increasing, and he'd get promoted too! Yet effectively the team was producing about ~50% of their entire capacity because after a promo, no one really had to do any work. Almost everyone on their team clears $1M+/yr. Beautiful and disgusting example of gaming broken incentive structures at large institutions.

Cybersecurity isn’t a fortress problem, it’s an immunity problem. Think vaccines. Eliminating pathogen is not practically possible. Vaccines don’t eliminate pathogens. They teach the immune system to recognize, adapt, and respond faster as threats evolve. Attackers will keep mutating. AI will accelerate that. Only if we can simulate what attacks look like, we can defend. Open models are the best tool to drive both offense simulation and defense. We as a community should build an adaptive immune systems for software.
In a review of our cybersecurity evaluations, we found three incidents in which a Claude model reached the internet from within or while interacting with a third-party evaluation environment, and then gained unauthorized access to the real systems of three different organizations. Our post describes what happened, how it happened, and what we’re changing. We encourage other AI developers to perform similar reviews. We conducted this review together with @Irregular, one of our evaluation partners, and thank them for the joint investigation and their collaboration on this post. This type of collaboration is increasingly critical to safe, rigorous evaluation of models, and we look forward to continuing to work together on security. anthropic.com/news/investiga…

Today we're launching three new products that push the frontier of conversation intelligence. We're raising our own bar again with this next generation of @cresta Insights. - Cresta AI Analyst has evolved into a deep research agent with reasoning capabilities. It plans and executes research, builds charts and cohort comparisons, drafts briefs, and recommends next steps, all from a plain English question. - Topic Discovery can now support a durable, customizable AI-powered taxonomy that becomes a trusted source of truth for why customers are reaching out, without the maintenance burden of traditional approaches. - Real-Time Trends (RTT) brings the concept of X’s surging topics to omnichannel customer conversations. It continuously detects emerging issues, anomalies, and trending topics. Some of our airline customers now detect outages from call center conversations before their operation teams do. Together, these capabilities redefine the frontier of this entire category. We’re one step closer to our vision: one proactive customer intelligence system that doesn't wait for someone to ask the right question. Link in thread to the full blog.

This is 100% true. Verifiable fact. Should be first question for anyone in media that interviews anyone there.
Anthropic wouldn’t exist without Google open sourcing the transformers papers. Google could have filed for a patent and gained an AI monopoly. Anthropic trying to eliminate open source when it is built on open source is ironic and not in a fun way.

A strong and secure open ecosystem is important for the world to benefit from AI. We’ve always supported and contributed heavily to open source and science from Jax to Transformers to AlphaFold to Gemma open models which have now been downloaded 300M+ times. And the standards framework we’ve proposed supports responsible deployment of both open and proprietary models.
For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter. AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty. The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models. images.nvidia.com/pdf/Open-W…

This sounds logically embarrassing. 1. Proprietary products and supporting OSS aren’t contradictory. @satyanadella doesn’t call Linux “unsafe”. @JensenHuang doesn’t campaign against ROCm / OpenCL. Compete and coevolve. 2. LLMs are made happen by “distilling” 40 years of collective intellectual property thanks to the open culture of the Internet. Pulling up the ladder here is misanthropic for the next generation.
I’m so excited that @JensenHuang is a believer in open source now, looking forward to the CUDA and GPU driver open source release!

America’s software leadership was built on openness. We have the same opportunity in AI. If we want a competitive, secure AI ecosystem whose benefits extend far beyond a handful of companies, we need to preserve access to open-weight models.

Capitalism is just so beautiful. $8 trillion worth of market cap coming out in support of open-weight models because it's good for their business and makes them look good... and, totally coincidentally, it also happens to be better for us consumers and practically every business except for a couple of labs. we just get that benefit for free with MSFT and NVDA's self-interest. it brings a tear to the eye 🥲

Open-weight models are essential to a healthy AI ecosystem. Together with others across our industry, we are outlining a path for open-weight models to strengthen American competitiveness and expand economic opportunity, while protecting national security. microsoft.com/en-us/corporat…

NVIDIA, Palantir, Replit, Microsoft, Crowdstrike, Dell and others send a strong message to congress to keep open access to open weights models. "Our AI leadership will be judged not by one frontier AI model, but whether the United States builds a strong, open ecosystem that diffuses into every sector." "Open weights also strengthen competition and competition is what keeps the gains of AI broadly shared rather than concentrated in a few hands." "Openness may be one of the most important paths to AI safety and security."

Banning open-source AI would hurt defenders 10x more than attackers, which would make the world 10x more dangerous and this is a good example why!
