Just got done running a call where this kid who is probably no older than 14 diagnosed the dead capacitor in his family’s condenser and replaced it himself. He said the compressor still sounded really bad so they called me out anyway. He didn’t have a meter that could read start/inrush amps. He only knew that the run amps weren’t over RLA. I explained how inrush amps work and told him that they need a soft starter. I explained the difference between hard and soft start kits. He said he’ll install one. The kids are gonna be all right.
