Both of these are responses to the globally defining feature of 21st century politics: educational polarization. Everyone is correct to think of higher education as the center of political gravity, but everyone is probably wrong to think they can control it.
to me one of the bigger lessons the whole Nikole Hannah-Jones education debate is that both left and right post-Obama have focused on education debates through a cultural lens (the left assumption that this all just about power and privilege, the right assumption that it's about wokeness and DEI) and kind of dismissed the tedious yet important nuts and bolts of system design
