Kyle Shanahan reveals he almost canceled the interview that eventually made him the 49ersβ head coach
βSan Francisco wasnβt my first choice on paper. I had four interviews and it was during the playoffs. You get two days off as a coaching staff, and those two days are really to see your family because youβre in this grind thatβs not going to end.β
βWe were having a snowstorm in Atlanta. I had to post up in this apartment building waiting for these interviews. I almost canceled one just because I was so exhausted.β
βI almost canceled San Francisco. My whole goal in life is to be a head coach and stay a head coach. It wasnβt just to become one and say I got there.β
βYou get so excited for the chance to be a head coach that a lot of guys will accept anything. I had watched my dad the hard way. Thatβs not what my goal was.β
βWhen I looked at San Francisco, I was nervous. They didnβt have a quarterback set up. They had changed coaches three years in a row. Their offense was ranked 31st, their defense was ranked 32nd.β
βI had about 30 minutes before Jed and Paraag were going to get there. I went and laid down in this bed and fell asleep. I hear their doors shut downstairs and Iβm in my boxers in bed with my hair all messed up. I soaked my hair, put my suit on as theyβre banging on the door, Iβm trying to fix my tie. I just opened it up and was like, βAll right, letβs go.ββ
