One surprising lesson @JasonSeibel and I learned while building @pgrustdb is the importance of arena memory allocators
Postgres uses arena allocators to allocate memory. When Postgres performs an operation, it creates an array, and every allocation goes through it. When Postgres finishes the operation, it frees the entire array. We thought this was done to make memory management simpler
We initially replaced the way Postgres did it with Rust lifetimes because it was much simpler
It turns out this was 2x slower because allocating and freeing memory in bulk is so much faster than freeing objects one at a time. Now we make sure all of our allocations are done in an arena, similar to how Postgres does to match Postgres on performance when it comes to allocating memory

How we got a Minecraft server running with WebAssembly on a single-threaded Durable Object with Cloudflare Workers.
This involved a lot of work to fully support Tokio on Cloudflare Workers with the Emscripten target to allow full support for Rust native applications.
