I've known all kinds of former Democrats who had an ah ha moment when they woke up and could no longer vote D. Always a transformative moment, one they will recount if you ask. I have never met a former Republican who suddenly started voting for Democratic candidates and policies because they suddenly saw the "truth." It only goes one way. It's about growing up, about maturity based on experience. One never grows stupider.

I think the main reason you've never seen a republican go the other way is that once they come over to the Republican Party, they realize it's really no different than the Democrat party so what's the point in going backwards? I was never a democrat, so I had nowhere else to go, but the Republican Party when I first started voting, but I realized some were in the first Bush presidency that there really was precious little difference between the two of them. Then I read more than a few history books, and realized the difference was even smaller than I thought before, and mostly having to do with the pace of progressivism, and the amount of church going and traditional values. We can't even go third-party because libertarians won't put down the bong and turn off the porn long enough to behave like mature adults, and all the other parties are pretty much leftists on steroids, so we have nowhere to go and increasingly we don't vote at all because we can't bring ourselves to vote for people who simply lie to our faces and then do whatever they want anyway provided it benefits them personally and fills their bank accounts.

The republicans aren't great, but the democrats are literally demonic.

As a veteran and longtime Minnesota resident , I voted for republicans on every ticket until Trump ran for president . I could never have voted for someone who mocked disabled vets and pows.

Can you elaborate on the hate? What hate did you have and how did you lose it?

I know several former Republicans that vote Democrat now. Go look at David French. They're like that. Basically they are never Trumpers. They don't vote Democrat because they had an ah ha moment and think Democrats are right about policy. They vote Democrat now because they hate Trump. They became woke too over it. It's so strange to witness it. These are/were friends of mine. Previously conservative Christians, now woke and voting for Democrats.

When people leave the Republican Party, they typically become independent, frustrated by Republicans promising the world but delivering a handful of dirt. Former Republicans usually vote for Libertarians, or Republicans as a lesser evil.

It only happens the other way when grifting is involved, like David French, Amanda Carpenter, Rick Wilson, and the like. It doesn’t happen with normal people.

I actually know one, and it floors me. She is a conservative Christian who always voted R, but her TDS has taken over such that she now calls herself "proudly woke" and she voted for Harris in 2024. She reposts Heather Cox Richardson and offers to "help" friends see the light.

Pretty much everyone I knew who was a Republican in college stopped being one because of Trump so seems like you just don't know enough people.

Former Republican here. Will never vote Republican again as long as MAGA policies are part of the party.

The only reasons people ever switch their votes from R to D are for some kind of gibmes that affects them or their ethnic group (not White) or as sheer accelerationism when the Rs are not doing anything. No one goes from being right wing to left intellectually.

Exactly. The only Republicans who I've seen go Democrat are ones here on X who were prominent figures and the fact that they went Dem tells me they've done something that they're guilty of and are afraid of Trump.

Trump is a light. That light either awakens you and you're drawn to it, or you're afraid of it exposing you so you repel it and seek darkness. Or you don't understand, all you see is a man causing a stir in both directions, you see that as chaotic and you default to hating Trump.

@redheadranting - I live in MN, and I have met many. It’s the saddest thing ever. It happened during the first Trump administration. The progressive paper whipped up so much fear of what Trump might do, they were scared. Then they ignited that fear in 2020, and blamed Trump/GOP.
