Today, September 22, 2026 — after nearly three years of interrupted education, the Latin Patriarchate School in Gaza has reopened its doors with the start of the new academic year, welcoming more than 1,000 students from kindergarten through Grade 12.
Throughout the years of war, providing education has remained a top priority for the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and His Beatitude Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.
Thanks to the generosity of benefactors, the guidance of Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, and the dedication of the local team in Gaza, together with the continued support of staff and colleagues in Jerusalem, the school has been reopened, along with its new kindergarten building.
This has required months of preparation and hard work amid severe shortages and difficult conditions. Throughout the years of war, the Holy Family Parish never stopped providing education to children who had sought refuge on its premises. Today, it is once again able to welcome a much larger number of students into its classrooms.
Fr. Gabriel expressed his deep emotion at the return of the children to the classrooms of the Patriarchate’s schools, saying: “Today, we saw tears of joy in the eyes of the children and their parents as they saw their children return to school after three years of instability.”
