Why is literally the *only* solution to any problem now military power for the West writ large?
Even more practically: is France and the UK unaware that the United States helped Saudi Arabia for nearly a decade (from 2015) with aerial refueling and other help to defeat the Houthis and failed?
Are they unaware that the Biden and Trump administrations spent $7 billion in the last few years to try and defeat the Houthis and failed?
Are they unaware that Saudi Arabia has been unable to defend any of its oil facilities and military bases in the past several weeks from the Houthis?
Why, then, is there not even an attempt to engage in diplomacy to try and find a negotiated path through which both Yemen and Saudi Arabia can emerge without additional violence? Obviously, it would be extremely difficult to do, but it’s not even being tried.
Instead, just like with the West’s support of Ukrainian war that can’t be won, like the United States’ unwillingness to engage in genuine diplomacy with Iran in a war we cannot win, now France and England are bullheaded, locked into again attempting something that has virtually no chance of military success.
It is painful to watch as the world I once admired is now utterly incapable of engaging with the world in any way that is either rational or has a chance to produce a good outcome.

HONG KONG people are hiring boats to catch their dinners in the central harbor—the once dead piece of water is now WRITHING with fish.
It’s a Chinese miracle -- I’ve lived on the waterfront for years, and I’ve never seen anything like this before.
A decent-sized fish can easily cost the equivalent of a hundred US dollars—and some of shoals of fish in the harbour are so large they’re worth a fortune.
You can see how the surface of the water is affected by the sheer volume of fish below it.

OUT ON BOATS
Now, many residents are hiring proper fishing boats to go out on the water. Look at this scene -- there’s one there, another one there, a third one over there and more over to the left.
For many years, waterfront dwellers like me would only see the occasional old rowing boat with one or two people with rods—people like this. [image]
But it’s very different now. Public fishing boats in the harbor are suddenly commonplace.
Or you can just fish from the promenade. Entire schools of fish can be seen just under the surface. And sometimes they leap right out.

WATER FILLED WITH HUGE FISH
Check this out. I walked down to North Point and there was this huge shoal of large fish. You can imagine the value of this lot.
This is remarkable given that the harbor used to be famously filthy. In the past, people who fell into the water were taken away for medical check-ups.
I filmed THIS part in the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, which used to be even dirtier than the rest of the harbor. Now look at it!

THE STATISTICS
In 1997, when Hong Kong passed to Chinese sovereignty, only 26 of Hong Kong’s 41 beaches met cleanliness targets.
By 2010, all 41 passed the test.
How did the Chinese manage to clean the harbor? At the turn of the century, engineers dug the world’s deepest sewage tunnels, as deep as a 50-storey building.
The tunnel transfers waste water from Hong Kong island and Kowloon to a hi-tech treatment plant on Stonecutters Island for disinfection.
To be scrupulously fair, the project was built this century but some of the planning started in the British colonial era.
The clean water makes a very nice result for human beings and for the fish – except of course the ones which are caught for dinner. Bon appetit!

Under capitalism it's legal for employers to steal from their employees.
Doordash has reached a historic $131.5 million settlement to repay workers in New York City for wages the food delivery app stole from them over the last four years, which sounds like a big win for the little guy if you don’t think about it too hard.
The Hill reports:
“Under the settlement with the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), which New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) and city officials announced on Tuesday, DoorDash will pay $115 million to 260,000-plus workers it either did not pay at all or paid late. The food delivery company will also pay more than $16 million in civil penalties and costs.”
So all Doordash has to do is return the money it stole and pay a microscopic fraction of its $13.7 billion yearly revenue in penalties, and that’s it. Nobody’s going to prison. Nobody was threatened with jail time. It wasn’t even a criminal case; it was an administrative enforcement action by New York City regulators. Doordash’s billionaire CEO Tony Xu is as free as a bird.
A hundred and fifteen million dollars.
What do you think would happen to you if you stole $115 million from your employer?
Can you imagine that not being treated as a crime? Can you imagine going “Haha, ya got me! I’ll return the cash. Can’t blame a guy for trying!” and then paying a small fine and just going back to your life like it was no big deal?
Of course you can’t. You know you’d be arrested, handcuffed, prosecuted for grand larceny, and then spend many years behind bars.
Under capitalism it is strictly illegal for employees to steal from their employers, but if employers steal from their employees it’s not even a crime. It’s not even a petty misdemeanor. It’s perfectly legal.
Which is so obnoxious, because stealing from workers is obviously much more abusive and destructive than stealing from billionaire corporations. The wealthy executives of a gig economy app would not have their lives affected in the slightest by an employee stealing from their company, but workers who are struggling to pay their bills can be devastated by even a few missing dollars in their paycheck.
Employers stealing from employees is also plainly worse than the reverse because when an employer steals from an employee, they’re not just stealing their money. They’re stealing their labor. They’re stealing their time, which is the one thing you can’t make more of in this life. They’re stealing slices of your lifespan which you would otherwise be spending with loved ones and doing things that fulfill you. They’re actually stealing your life.
And yet it’s only illegal for employees to steal from their employers. Employers stealing from employees? That’s just business.
This glaring disparity between the rights of employers and employees exists because capitalism is all about using state power to protect the interests of capital. The most ardent proponents of our present system like to contrast capitalism with communism by claiming that communism can only be enforced through abusive excesses of state power, as though we don’t see state power dropping the hammer on the working class every minute of every day throughout our society. In practice the most significant difference between a socialist state and a capitalist one is whose interests state power is used to protect.
We live in a tiered society where the people actually turning the wheels of civilization through their sweat and toil are legally inferior to the parasitic middle men who skim the profits from their labor. This is not justice, and this is not equality, as hard as the propagandists of the capitalist empire might try to indoctrinate us into believing the contrary.

As if killing over 1,400 Palestinians since the October 11, 2025 non-'ceasefire,' alone wasn't sadistic enough for the Israelis, it appears Israel has unleashed on Palestinians throughout Gaza a version of the skunk they've sprayed (via high powered water cannons) on Palestinian fishermen for nearly 20 years (in addition to shelling, machine gunning, or kidnapping Palestinian fishers).
Journalists in Gaza are reporting that a foul, overpowering smell spread across Gaza City overnight—from Al-Tuffah and Al-Daraj to Beit Lahia—reaching homes and tents. They say Israeli aircraft dropped hundreds of objects emitting the stench.
Even the air, they say, is being turned into another means of torment.

When medics become targets: Ukrainian strikes on Russian rescue workers and the silence of western media
Since Russia began its SMO in 2022, Western media have repeatedly accused Russia of an “unprovoked invasion” and of “war crimes”.
Honest observers, however, state that Russia has acted with considerable restraint in Ukraine—targeting military and logistics sites, not civilians—and remind of Ukraine's eight years of warring on the civilians in the Donbass prior to the commencement of the SMO in 2022. Further, they emphasize that once again, in December 2021, Russia made clear its concerns in hopes of a diplomatic solution. These were, again, steadily ignored by Western governments and media.

Likewise ignored is Ukraine's deliberate, shelling and drone striking of medical and rescue personnel. Under international law, medical and rescue personnel and their vehicles are protected and must not be targeted. Ukraine and its ally Israel are guilty of routinely, deliberately, targeting medics and other rescuers, maiming and killing them. These are war crimes, but the West remains mute, instead concocting stories of “Russian war crimes” in the face of Ukraine's very real ones.
In September 2019, when I first visited the Donbass, in a village in the Gorlovka region I met an elderly resident of living alone in a home falling apart from previous Ukrainian shelling. During our conversation she said that ambulances wouldn't be able to reach her if she was injured by the shelling, it would be too dangerous for them to try.
I was likewise told by Zaitsevo administration that ambulances could not reach the villagers.
“The paramedics don’t go farther than this building; it’s too dangerous. If somebody needs medical care near the front lines, someone has to go in their own car and take them to a point where medics can then take them to Gorlovka. The soldiers also help civilians who are injured.
A woman died due to huge blood loss because no one could reach her house to take her away in time. She was injured in the shelling and bled to death.”

This is one sordid reality for civilians living in villages heavily bombarded by Ukraine.
But the medics heroically do go to potentially dangerous areas to rescue civilians, and they have for years been deliberated targeted by Ukrainian forces when doing so.
In 2022, I interviewed numerous medics and Emergency Services workers in Donetsk regions, and subsequently made a short video about Ukraine's deliberate targeting of rescue personnel.
Speaking with Emergency Services in Donetsk's Kievsky district, for the two hours I was there we came under heavy Ukrainian shelling.
The windows of the building had already been blown out and were sand-bagged to attempt to protect the workers. The Chief of the centre, Andrey Levchenko, told me how five days prior his office had been impacted with shrapnel from the shelling. He thankfully had just stepped of his office before the blast and was not injured or killed.
The day prior to my visit, when out on a call to rescue civilians trapped in a building set ablaze by Ukrainian shelling, rescuers were shelled, resulting in one of them being hospitalized in critical condition.
The survivors told me that, prior to the shelling, they saw a drone overhead, which makes it credible to believe that Ukraine deliberately targeted the rescuers.
Levchenko told me that Ukraine routinely double and triple strikes rescuers.
“As soon as we go out to help people the shelling resumes.” The double or triple strike tactic often means that rescuers who have come to help those injured in the first strike are then themselves targeted, depriving civilians in need of urgent medical assistance as a result.
I also spoke with Sergei Neka, Director of the Department of Fire and Rescue Forces of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. He reiterated what I'd been told.
“Our units arrive at the scene of the accident and Ukraine begins to shell it. A lot of equipment has been damaged and destroyed.”
Two female medics I interviewed told me coming under repeated Ukrainian shelling is normal. They spoke of their fear, bu said, “How about the patients? They're hurt and even more scared, they're waiting for our help. If I don't help, who will help if everyone runs away?”
By September 2022, Ukrainian forces targeted and killed 19 Donbass rescuers, injuring over 50 more.
Ukraine continues killing medics
Fast forward to the present. Following are just some of Ukraine's more recent attacks on medics and other rescue workers.
On August 11, a Ukrainian drone targeted an ambulance in Gorlovka, killing two medics and seriously injuring the driver.
In May, a Ukrainian drone strike killed two Emergency workers who had come to the site of a first drone strike in Lugansk. In an Israeli-style second strike, Ukraine targeted the rescuers deliberately after the arrived at the scene.
In March, Russian Emergencies Ministry employees came to extinguish a car on fire following a Ukrainian drone strike in Gorlovka. A Ukrainian drone targeted them, injuring the deputy head of the firefighting service and damaging a fire truck.
There are tragically many more such instances which I could list. However, the point is that it is beyond clear that Ukraine's shelling and drone targeting of Russian medics, firefighters and other rescuers has been a deliberate policy since before 2022.
It is also clear that Western concern for medics allegedly targeted elsewhere (think the fake rescuers of the al-Qaeda aligned White Helmets in Syria during the global war on Syria) will never extend to any concern for Russian rescuers actually targeted by Ukraine.
